Alaska Official calls for Investigation into Russian Crab Advertising
“Alaska’s speaker of the House wants an investigation of Wal-Mart sales of Russian crab that’s packaged in a box featuring a vessel that catches U.S. crab in the Bering Sea.
The sales promotion attempts to ride the fame of the F/V Northwestern and its skipper, Sig Hansen, who is featured in “Deadliest Catch,” the reality series broadcast on the Discovery Channel.” This was the report today from the Seattle Times.
This reaction from the Alaska Speaker of the house stems from an exclusive story published in the Seattle Times on Tuesday, November 15, 2007.
For fans of this site, the real surprise was the story of Captain Sig Hansen also reported in the Seattle Times. Our boats captain, Phil Harris was quoted in this story.
Phil Harris, owner of the F/V Cornelia Marie of Kodiak, Alaska, also turned down the Global Fishing marketing pitch.
“This whole thing stinks to high heaven,” said Harris. “We are madly trying to get consumers to buy American seafood.”
As the quote states, Captain Phil is not happy about Russian crab being promoted by an Alaskan fisherman. Phil Harris and the F/V Cornelia Marie crew is not associated in anyway with the sale of Russian crab. We have and will always support the fishing business in the U. S. and do not in anyway support the efforts of anyone who chooses to do otherwise.
Alaska King Crab is a superior product. The crab industry is highly regulated in the United States and has been for decades. Here is an excerpt from the Alaska Seafood Institute.
“Regardless of seafood being harvested, once the quota has been reached, the season is closed, ensuring the needs of the harvest are balanced with the needs of the ecosystem. Limits are precisely calculated to keep the world-stocked with a continuous, ever-replenishing supply of seafood the way nature intended it from the wild of Alaska.”
It will be impossible for Alaskan fishermen to compete against a country where illegal fishing is allowed to exist. The state of Alaska and Alaskan fishermen have worked hard to establish “Alaska” as a brand name when it comes to seafood. Alaska Governor, Sarah Palin states, “Recognized the world over for its effective resource management practices, Alaska is the gold standard for premium wild and sustainable seafood.”
We hope consumers do not confuse Alaska crab with crab from other countries such as Russia.

Hey Hannah!
Got out of the hospital Wednesday evening, was there for 2 weeks. Everything went fine, no worries, a bit difficult getting around, using a walker at this time for a while. About a 3 or 4 month recovery so I have way oo much tim on my hands & can’t do much of anything! No bending, no housework (darn it), pretty much resting so this all heals good. I’m very grateful that you were thinking of me, I really appreciate it! I too am really glad we’re friends,it’s a great feeling & your’e so much fun to talk to. How was Spring break? Fun I hope, Nans’ new dogs sound adorable! I hope you had a great visit with her, family is very important, it’s great your’e close by to her. Glad to hear life is sort of back to normal for you, the smallest changes can really screw things up for awhile, but usually straightens up fine. I missed you & am so glad to hear your bff isn’t too far away that you can’t see her, that’d be a bummer big time. I hope everything else is going really good for you, it’s great to be writing to you again & hearing how your’e doing. Keep me posted!! I am really glad you ARE my friend.
LOL, Lynn

Ohhh i almost forgot i have to get glasses, im kinda mad about that but i’ll get over it. lol, ttyl!!
-hannah-
P.S. ur be fine in the surgery!! UR # 1!!!!!!!
March 17th, 2008 at 7:51 am
Dear Hannah,
So how did the concert turn out? Congratulations on getting a speaking part ! Great for you! I bet it all went real good for you & you weren’t as nervous as when you started. I bet your family was so proud of you! You sure have alot of things going on at one time . I don’t even know you except for writing back & forth & I’m really proud of all your accomplishments since we started “talking”. Good for you to try all the different things you have & keeping your grades up & you are doing so well!!! I can’t express how happy I am for you.Since we started writing youv’e really done so much & tried so many different things, it sounds like your life is getting alot more exciting then you thought it is. Sorryto hear about your bff moving, I have no ida how far that’ll be from you, but, there’s always the phone & emails. Don’t be too upset, it’ll all be ok.You’ll see.
Tomorrow will be the last day you’ll hear from me for awhile, Wednesday is surgery ( yipee!) & I’ll won’t be able to sit up long enough to type. I will try to write tomorrow, if I don’t, remember I’m thinking of you, I’ll miss our conversations alot, I look forward to hearing from you & all your adventures. Wish there was a way to give you my email, kinda hard on a site like this though. I ‘ll look for you on this site somewhere. I have to keep up with my favorite fishing crew anyway! There’s a person in NJ who knows you’ll do great in school & thinks alot of you, as a friend & a Mom.
Take care, I’ll find you somewhere in this site, just keep writing so I can. Try to talk tomorrow, LOL Lynn
March 14th, 2008 at 1:18 pm
Lynn,

O.K. my school has a Quior and im in it and later 2night we have a Concert, and my teacher gave me a speeking part ( to introduce the song ) and im really scared my face is going to get really red. But im over it, i no i will do a good job ( hopefully ) lol, and im kinda excided cuz my whole family is going. The songs r about like just movies i guess, and my fav. one is Into The West, it’s off of the Lord Of The Rings, it’s a really good song. well ttyl!!!!!!!!!!
March 12th, 2008 at 12:12 pm
Yes its true, crab caught by a person from Alaska tastes much better than crab caught by a Russian person. It must be because Russians are filthy animals who have no right to catch crab in their own oceans and sell it. So they guys from “Deadliest Catch” are so brave to go out on the Bering Sea and catch crab, but Russians are not? Whats the difference really my point is King Crab from Bering Sea is King Crab from Bering sea there is no difference, I will buy which ever is the best bargain. Probably Руский
March 10th, 2008 at 1:53 pm
Lynn,
DARN!!!!!! I didnt’ make the team but im over it alreaady, i cant keep a-hold of something for so long i got over it. and i could never tell u were a mom, lol, i want to be a mom one day. Even though i didn’t make the team my coach asked me if wants to take the times of the runners, so i said yes, so im still a part of the team. My BFF is moving, im soooooooooooooooooooo mad about the, she will stay around here, but shes moving into Peoria i think, and i live in Pekin, but we’ll stay in touch, we can text, im, send e-mails, send letters through the mail, and talk on the fone. so we r still going to be bff’s FOR LIFE, we r so important to eachother, it’s still processing in my mind that shes moving, cuz i can’t believe it. well ttyl, keep my up-dated.

March 4th, 2008 at 4:55 pm
Lynn,
Yeah, i LOVE summer days! and night when u just sit outside and listen to everything going on. well 2day is only the second days of track try outs so idk how well i did or even if i made the team yet, but my teacher said i was really good at shop-put ( it’s where u throw an 8lbs ball, from ur chest ) and i think im going to make the team cuz i was kinda good at the sprinting. so i have a good chance of making the team. but what really sucks about it is that my 2 BFFs couldn’t try out, but i have other friends to go with. and they work us till we want to fall over, i kinda ( like 1/4 of the ways ) know how the people on Deadliest Catch. but not that much. I get A LOT of exersize!!!!!!!! well i have 2 go my bff is on the internet so i have to talk to her cuz i haven’t since track try outs started ( 2 days ago)!!!!!!! BYE
Hannah
March 4th, 2008 at 8:09 am
Hey Hannah,
How did track tryouts turn out? Sorry you feel ill especially over the weekends, that’s a bummer. Yesterday & today are in the low 60s, rain later, heavy at times, tornado watch down here, hate living where it’s so flat. Me & alot of people in the midwest I suppose. I LOVE the summer!Really enjoy the long days, getting some sun, hopping in the pool & doing the plants & flowers, just the smell of the newly mown grass is the best! Love the smell of newly cut onion grass, really know summer’s around the corner then. I enjoy Spring for the newness of everything, summer for the warm days, Autumn for the colors & winter for family time & hopefully snow. There’s not a whole lot Idon’t like, evrything has it’s special place in life. So… school classes still going along good? Let me know how you did in track tryouts. Your’e a sprinter? That’s impressive, guess it’s hard work & concentration, good for you! Hope everythings good with your family, sounds like you enjoyed the warm weather out there too, I read outside for awhile & it felt really great not freezing my butt off! Getting cooler the next few days, dropping about15 or so degrees, knowing warm time are coming soon is a good thing, tired of winter already.
Write soon. Talk to you latr, Lynn
March 2nd, 2008 at 1:55 pm
Lynn,
I can’t wait till this winter is over, 2day in Pekin, IL is sooooooooooooooooo warm. March 1st, 2008 at 11:02 am
Hey Hannah,
Really glad to hear your’e doing so well in your classes. Yes I’ve been to some concerts but not in years! For a young lady you sure made me feel better about the surgery! You’re right that I should think of how much better I will feel when it’s all done,it can’t feel any worse then it does now. Can’t wait for winter to end already. Cool & windy today, same tomorrow, was about 30 this past Thursday, supposed to be up near 60 next week! Crazy weather out here, not much snow this year. Some would’ve been nice, had alot of rain instead. Have a wood stove here it’s great as long as I keep feeding in wood, I do like the smell & heat it gives off, makes me feel like I don’t live at the shore ( which I like) saves on heating oil which is way up in price here, like gas, food etc.. It’s ok to live down here there’s no jobs really, they’re up North Jersey somewhat Wih our taxes here & prices of everything I don’t knw how much longer I can stay in this state. Too expensive, plus I really don’t care to live here really anymore. Kind of stuck though, can’t afford to move either.Oh well, hope all’s great with you. Write soon.Lynn
February 25th, 2008 at 5:04 pm
Lynn,
School is going great, i am passing all my classes, and i think i am moving on to 8th grade, but we have 1 more quarter to go then i’ll go to 8th grade. I can’t wait but this year goes by WAY to fast. well this year of school, it seems like just yesterday i was so scared that i was going to get lost or something. lol, im sry to hear that u have to get a hip replacement, i hope it goes well!!! i know how it feels to not get to talk to someone in A LONG time i went 2 weeks one time with out talking to my parents ( i was with my aunt and uncle ) and we got to talk on the phone but that was it and not very often. anyway my bff is the best person in the world ( in my opinon ) she is such a great friend, and she and my sis r the only people i can trust with any of my secrets. OMG i went to a Brad Paisley ( country singer ) concert and he was AWESOME!!!!!! i caught a pick the he used when he was playing the guatar and my dad got me a t-shirt, and our seats were on the right side of the stage and he looked right at me and smiled, lol, i sound like a crazy fan, but it was wonderful. do u listen to country music? have u ever been to a concert? i have only been to 2 concerts in my whole like, they r AWESOME. but i never brag cuz i hate making people feel bad, well i have to i hope to hear from u before u get a hip replacement. Dont be scared, it will be nothing!!!!!!! All u have to do is think of something else the whole time just think about what u r going to do after u get out of there!! Bye!!!!!!!! ttyl!!

February 25th, 2008 at 10:25 am
Hey Hannah,
Sorry it took so long to write back.We had a few inches of snow heealso, the problem here is this town has no real snow plows, they put plows on the front of recycling trucks, they have no idea how to take care of the roads here. Hope you made out ok with the storm there, hope you heard from your pawpaw & he’s ok too.Hope school’s going good for you & your’e doing good in your classes. I’m going to be out of touch for a long while in March, I have to have hip replacement,it’s always given me trouble & the pain’s getting to be too much. I’ll write for as long as I can &hope to catch up with you on this site somewhere I’m sure this topic will be dropped before I get back on so I’lllook for you at another topic.Whe a good topic comes up write something so I can find you again ok? Not going to be for a few weeks yet though.
Keep up the good work in school & enjoy all the snow while you can.
Write soon, Lynn
February 6th, 2008 at 2:00 pm
Lynn,
OMG we have a lot of snow!!! now we have at least 3 or 4 inches but we’re supost to be getting like 6 or 7 inches by 6:00 tonight. witch means i might not have school 2morrow!!!!!!! my mom picked me up early 2day cuz the snow was so bad so many people got in wrecks and my mom didn’t want to drive with a lot of people on the road so she picked me up like an hour early from sckool. Yes it is scary waiting to see if their alright when they get home ( my pawpaw ) ( also any truck driver ) but the most u can do is wait for a call. I watch A LOT of t.v. well i love animals so i was watching animal planet along time ago and there was a show on called Animal Mericals and i saw on there a truck driver had a huge dog and the dog know he was in trouble ( the guy was getting robed ) well the dog jumped out of the window ( of the HUGE truck ) and the dog just had surgary on her paw, and scared away the robers. I cried cuz i was thinking about my pawpaw at that time. and now i really want him to have a big dog but sadly my nana and pawpaw’s 2 HUGE dogs just died, and now they just have 2 birds and a cat. And he said no other dog can replace them, so now im scared for him when he goes away!! but also imagin how the family that have relatives that work ona crab boat feel, that has 2 be hard!! well i have to go i have big essay due in 3 days and i have to print it somehow. Write soon!!!!
-hannah-
P.S. I saw my bff and her mom gave me a free hair cut, i love it!!
February 4th, 2008 at 11:05 am
Hannah,
Hope your’e feeling better. Knew you’d do good on the test, you seem to be a smart person. Hope your pawpaw gets home safely,I too had truck drivers in my family & it is bad worrying when they’re not home for awhile. Hope all is good there, did you get hit with snow this last storm? Here it’s either nothing or we’re hammered by a storm, so far nothing. Keep feeling better. Write soon.Lynn

Lynn,
I dont live in NJ, i live in IL. it’s an ok state but alot of gangs and stuff. My family doesn’t reeally go anywere out of the state ( beside Mississippi ) thats were my pawpaw lives. I did get good grades on my test cuz i studied all night i was very tierd though, i prob. only got about 5 or 6 hours of sleep that night. i kinda have alot going on now, my pawpaw is coming home ( my other pawpaw ) from his job as a truck driver, im so happy cuz i’ve seen alot of thing ( very bad things ) like crashes and stuff happen to other truck drivers, and we r going to Mississippi in a year or so, i have to keep up on my skool work now cuz i was resentlyvery sick so i stayed home for a day, but im doing better ( i have a sore throat, a headache, a sore body, a stuffy nose, and watery eyes oh and a bad cough) it really sucks being sick but now all i have is the stuffy nose and watery eye, and i get a headache off and on, oh and a really sick sounding cough. i’ve got my bff’s cell # so ive been texting her so we can keep in touch. i get to see her soon, im so excited cuz her mom is a hair cuter person so i get a free hair cut ( which i need ) lol, well in going to go i have a movie i want to watch but i have to watch it in the living room cuz i dont have a dvd player in my room. Hey Hannah,
Glad you got a new phone. That was really nice of your bff. Hope you got a hold of her & all’s well. Things here ( coastal southern NJ) are ok if you like the shore area, very busy in the summer, lots of tourists, some are ok, just bottles up the parkway so if you live here & have to go anywhere north of here your’e sitting in alot of traffic trying to get home. I enjoy going to Maine with my siblings every year, it’s a good 9-10 hour drive to get where we stay though. Scared of flying, too high up, so I sit in traffic esp. in August.
Looking forward alot to the show coming back, want to see the escapades of this season, I’m sure there were alot. I must have 36 hrs of stuff on dvr to watch,I kept some of the best of the series also.
Hope all’s good. I’m sure your tests grades weren’t that bad. I was bad in science too, one day it all clicked & i got it,math was no better for awhile ,got that too. Study hard & you’ll do great!

Lynn,
Yes A LOT of times in my life r hard!! but i always get through them. my bff say that i have a cell fone but it was a very crappy one that sometimes didn’t even work so ( god bless her heart ) bought me a new one and its way better! since im only 13 i dont realy know how hard it can be to pay bills and get food and stuff, but it’s also hard as a kid, ( u can’t go anywere without money to spend , u cant spend any money if u dont have it, and u dont usually get what u want) bcuz i really need glasses or contacks, and my mom and dad can only pay glasses, which is good but i would nather have contacks, but u get what u need! i hate it when people r always braggin about how much money they have, and then everyone around them r like agreeing and i cant say anything cuz i dont want to be made fun of, i know u shouldn’t care whta anyone thinks but to be made fun of all day everyday would be the last thing i need right now. I was very lucky to go to the movies last weekend but i wont beable to do that again for a while. My mom says that if i have good grades and i go to colage ( how ever u spell it ) then my life will be good when i grow up. but im always worried about what is going to happen the next day, i had 5 test in skool 2day i know the ones in science i got an f on cuz i never studied and the 2 in math i got an a or b and the on in language arts i have no idea. my bff ( that bought me my new fone ) wasn’t at skool 2day,a nd i tried texting her i tried e-mailing and i tried calling and i tried IMing and nothing she wont answer so im really worried about her idk what happen or if something even happend but im really worried. if she died or got in a wreck with her mom or something i dont know what i would do, i would have no one to trust anymore, besides my sis,a nd i dont want to only tell my sis my secrets. well im going to go, it’s 6:00 and im going to try and get a-hold of her so i know shes ok. It’s nice to talk to u ( well type )

Hey Hannah,
Sometimes things can be very hard & it looks like there’s no end in sight & there’s hardships & very down times. I’m not by any means rich, I was an EMT & got paid ,not great for the job I had to do. Was in an accident & shattered my collar bone & dislocated my ac joint,2 surgeries & still will never be good enough to lift over 10 lbs. So I’m not working or getting any money of my own coming in. When my almost ex- husband works (union constuction) we do good, but this year he was laid off alot more than he worked & could’nt get unemployment, we made it though. Gotta have faith. Things could always be worse, I’m very thankful for what I do have & I’m here to enjoy it.I know not having much is rough, been there most of my life, you will do fine & it does get better, stay in school work hard so you can help yourself when you need to. Believe me I’d really be happy having a job where I could use the medical backround I studied so hard for.I know feeling positive is hard sometimes, but it’s a great moral booster. You take care & keep in touch ok? Your friend.
You take care, your’e alot better off than you realize right now. It’s good we’re now friends, I like it alot more this way.Keep your head up & never be ashamed of circumstances right now.

Our (USA) federal legislators earmark tariff waivers into bills and ALL of them get signed in the oval office. I got king crab on sale for $7.50 a lb.. I saw the packages with Hanson’s boat on them but that is not what I bought. No packages claim the product is from Alaska. My boxes are marked from a Chinese processor selling crab from Russian waters. It is our elected officials that allow these foreign products to flood our markets and step all over domestic production. Did I help? At $7.50 a lb., who would turn that down? I wouldn’t be affording it otherwise. I doubt I’ll get it again for that price. It’s not Hanson or the foreign producers, it’s our elected officials that are the biggest threat.

Lynn,
It’s ok lynn, its nice to know that someone is like me ( on tight money ) cuz these days it seems like everyones rich but me. i dont have to pay bills yet ( cuz im only 13, but i know someday it will be hard for me, too. but it’s also hard on me and brother and sister cuz we cant go anywere cuz we dont have any extra money, and if we do were REALLY lucky. i sry if my other message was kinda mean but i thought u were also a rich person who was bragging. SRY!!!!! my bff has this really cool phone it has a full keyboard and i got so mad cuz i have this really cheep lookin track phone, and she brags about it ( sometimes ), i am really lucky to even have a ( cell ) phone and a computer and my own room, we moved 3 or 4 years ago and it was a VERY HARD buget from then on till now my dad just got a new job and it pays A LOT but we use the money on bills and food and stuff. well it was nice to meat ( well type to ) someone who understands the money problem in my world ( and urs ) !!!!! lol, bye!!! ( type back )
January 15th, 2008 at 8:44 am
I was not & am not dissing the show as Hannah implied. It’s a great show. I was only opnionating & I guess some people took it personally. I am sorry that I seemed to have pissed someone off. I know all about being very tight on money, pay bills with no money for food, welcome to my life. I only got over zealous about bitching about being duped by not paying attention. I apologize.

I do agree with what Michelle said that Sig trusted the wrong people with this deal and what happen with a person that “new” in a bussiness, people with questionable ethics will try to take them for a ride. I personally think he should of done some fact checking into this deal before going into head long, and gotten himself a second or a thrid option on the matter at hand. If he did, he would of at least known about the questionable bussiness practices done by this person and could of save himself some trouble in the long run.
Here is some that was posted by their webmaster about all of this:
[The box clearly says PRODUCT OF RUSSIA. So unless the consumer thinks Russia still owns Alaska they are more informed than the other boxes or sales techniques out in the market place.
But back to the topic at hand, Trident does the same thing, "PRODUCT OF RUSSIA" The box Sig is on also says the same thing. But for some reason nobody took issue with it.
So I guess I have to ask, are you upset that Sig Hansen fishes his entire quota of Alaskan King Crab until it's met and that he also helps sell Russian Crab? Maybe your upset because he has popularized Alaska Crab Fishing so that people who never cared before--now care, sounds like he did something right.
I suppose you could be upset if he sat at home all year and didn't fish his quota at all and just promoted Russian crab. That would hurt the industry. But your telling me Trident who probably does 90% of the processing up there, doesn't hurt the industry by re-boxing and selling Russian crab? That is absurd.
I personally think this is a great thing, it's about time answers were given why 70% of the King Crab in Alaska is pre-sold to Japan and not brought back to our mainland. But we know the answer already, Americans won't pay $20 something a pound in the majority and the Japanese will. I also know as many others do, one man on a seafood box in a WalMart isn't going to change the world.
I'm pretty sure he could careless if he ever receives money for the endorsement, the biggest reward would be for him to say 100% of his Alaskan Catch is going to the United States.
Do I think he should receive the endorsement money? You bet your ass I do! If Sig has to be the scapegoat that's gotta be worth something. The article is right Sig is a Crabber not a marketing whiz or public relations specialist. People have commented on the Press Release as spin? He didn't have a publisher, publicist he used his Family to write that. No matter what you think of Sig and the other captains. When deadliest catch has run it's course and they become old news and forgotten they still have to get up, work long hours and fish.
Quote:
an average of 2 million pounds or 76 percent or of U.S. king crab exports went to Japan, according to the National Marine Fisheries Service.
But that probably doesn't matter right now because Sig is pictured on a Box for Russian Crab. So 34% is left for everyone else, that's not much crab. But that figure is not new, in fact that study was done between 2001-2004. However, WHAT IS FANTASTIC is that now in 2007, it took only ONE MAN to appear on a box in Walmart for even the State of Alaska to say, "Hey where's our crab going?".
If you want to be mad at someone, your targeting the wrong person. You need to target the middle line seafood restaurants, as they have been selling you King Crab from Alaska Waters (read: Russian) for years.. BUT..wait---wait for it---it's actually your fault, our fault that is.
What? Exactly, because we as consumers will not pay $20-$28 per lb for King Crab at chain seafood restaurants, sure you and I will say, "I would"---but we don't make up the majority. So no food chain is gonna stock Fresh Ultra High Grade Alaskan King Crab only to have it spoil because *WE* want the best deal for the least amount of money.
Don't kid yourselves either you all ate, enjoyed and damn well liked the price you have been paying at those chains. If you wanna be pissed off and stand up for something. Stand up for the Russian crabber who probably makes peanuts for what Russian crab is being sold for around the world who is most probably fishing unsafe, untrained and almost unpaid. But I guess I only care about them because they are human beings and I don't perceive any human being as this under-classed dare I say it, "Russian" as you all are so quick to spout off about.
Since this story has aired, Russia is banning the export of crab to Japan, Russia is cracking down on their crabbing, Law Makers are asking, "What the hell is going on", and probably one of the larger if not the largest big box retailers is issuing press releases. If you ask me, maybe Sig did excite a change that needed to happen or at least be told in the Alaskan Crab Fleet.
I think Sig will pull through fine with this, he has his family and his character and that's all that matters. Reputation...pfft That just what people think you are, it's character that matters. He's shot straight and hasn't changed his story, he's issued his release. If he finds that this "Russian" product was poached as some say, you bet your asses he won't be supporting that, but if it's legally caught--then fish on..
I will say this, what you read in the papers, online, in print and even here take with a grain of salt if you must, because the heart of the matter is not anything that will be solved or fixed here or other on-line sites. This isn't anything the fleet work out itself, it's a fishing issue and the real story is playing out---not on-line between fans but within the fleet and in Dutch. You may cast stones and spout your words of anger, but you can be rest assured the fleet will work it out without the intervention of brokers, media and television broadcast time slots.
This will be my only response to this issue. I'm not going to debate it, argue it or agree with others or disagree. I will close with this--if your not willing to shell out the $20-$28 price tag Alaskan King Crab then you really don't have much to say about the issue.
I’m a huge fan of the show, and a great admirer of the Hansens, Phil and the other crews. I think Sig is understandably trying to turn the publicity generated by the show to the advantage of their family corporation, and kudos to him. I believe his stated goal, of promoting Alaskan crab, should be supported, though perhaps purchasing Global’s product might not be the most appropriate way to do so. Perhaps Sig trusted the wrong people in dealing with Global; I don’t know enough about the situation to judge, but that’s a common error of trustworthy people — they tend to believe everyone else is as trustworthy as they are. In any case, please know that we folllow the exploits of all the crews closely every week, that we say prayers for your safety and success, and that we have a far greater respect for the seafood we eat, knowing the effort and risk involved in bringing it to us.
December 19th, 2007 at 4:38 pm
Lynn,
I swear to god, u have a problem! o.k. maybe it stupid that we aren’t reading lables, but get over it. and if ur dissing this show then y in the hell do u watch it? if u dont watch it then good, bcuz we dont we DONT need ur opinion. and just to let to ya know my family isn’t doing so hot on money right now, and we do check for lables. But now im sticking up for all those people who really dont care. and also how in the hell did u get past 3rd grade u ned to learn how to spell ( the correct way ) and put spaces in between ur words! And i know that most of my words r not like perfect nut nothing s really perfect and it called shortening ur wrods so u can write more in les time. The bottom line is GET OVER IT!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
December 13th, 2007 at 12:14 pm
I wrote here on Nov. 21 & since then have read where some people STILL aren’t paying attention to labeling!! It is NOT hard to read a damn label! I saw where people after me had written they bought crab thinking it was Alaskan &it wasn’t. Obviously people aren’t even readingwhat other people write & they wonder how they got duped! LEARN TO READ THE DAMN LABELS!!! If you were overcharged on a bill you’d SEE that & bitch, if you ACTUALLY pay attention you will see where the product is from. If you don’t read the label first then YOU made the mistake so don’t bitch & moan about it. If people are so concerned about made in America tell me why they want everything so damn cheap. It’s THAT reason this country outsources, since we make so muchmoney here to make somethng & you see it & say too highly priced & you see the same thing made in China for alot less where will OUR American dollars be going? It’s NOT to American workers that overprice goods it’s “fair trade agreements”signed by our government! I do thank God everyday Ilive where I can say what Iwant & buy what I want we need more American goods across the board, not only crab!
Crab is one small part of a bad big picture.
So if you want quality goods (though maybe higher priced) read the labels & buy American, not that hard to do.
December 5th, 2007 at 12:40 pm
Very, very bad move from sig and the boys. you don’t crap on your own door step. .. promoting this russian sea food company and saying it’s for the good of king crab is rubbish, illegal fishing , over fishing and the main man was arrested in russia for money laundering !! they sell under size and under age, illegal crap all over the world .. ……taught more of the hansen brothers. . .
December 3rd, 2007 at 10:15 am
People, I was as surprised as anyone to find out about this. The thing now is to look on the package of any seafood you are planning to buy to see where it comes from. You can get some surprises. Tuna can come from some pretty unlikely places in the far east. I have seen fin fish from China. So look carefully. The country of origin is required to law to be there. It is the only item so required. I complained rather vocally in the fish department. There are rather large chain stores I will now shop in because of country of origin.
November 29th, 2007 at 8:02 pm
leave the hansens alone, they have been fishing for generations like many others & now they have a huge amount of publicity they are using it to their advantage & more power to them. why not make hay while the sun shines. i dont care if they sell knickers, northwestern vibrators or russkie crab. they are capitalizing in a capitalist society. so let them do what they want & let the other captains do what they want. lets face it if you are honest the FV northwestern has become the star of the deadliest catch (not that the show could survive without the other great characters) & they are cashing in - anyone who says they wouldnt do the same is a fool or a liar. There are a lot of sour grapes going around here.
November 25th, 2007 at 7:46 pm
hey sig , fishing ? my sister is a hooker too , she also sells to anybody because she has no standards either .
November 25th, 2007 at 7:31 pm
hi , the greed of a fast dollar always comes back to bite you on the ass .. is sig going to take his russian money and move to siberia ? i met Captains Johnathan and Andy the first time in homer in 1985 , fantastic people , still have picture of time bandit on my living room wall and a later photo of phil and his boat next to it. i thank god that there are real men like you guys still on the water . from the chesapeake bay we say phil , jonathan , andy , the very best to you…long before sig dropped the soap , we knew who the best crews and boats are.. dutch
November 24th, 2007 at 8:54 pm
You know, it never ceases to amaze me that those that yell the loudest about fairness and integrity are the ones that are the first to cave. This has reached beautiful uptown San Pedro CA, and the smell is pure rotten! We have a fishing - well used to have - a substantial finishing industry here until it was all outsourced to foreign countries. Star Kist, Chicken of the Sea, big time stuff. The bottom line, dear ones, is money!!! Clearly Mr. Hansen thought it was enough of an incentive to go over to the Russian side by selling out his industry and long time fishing friends. I have seen the package in question and clearly Mr. Hansen has made an endorsement of this product. His name appears on the front as well as a likeness of the Northwestern. Nothing could be more telling. But the part that really burns my biscuits is the packaging is red, white and blue. The U.S. colors of our flag. Granted in 1991 the Russians changed their flag to horizontal equi-part red, white and blue, but it gives the notion that this is an American Product and Mr. Hansen endorses it. Thereby it must benefit the Alaskan Fishing Industry. Wrong! I have never set foot in a Wall Mart and probably never will. Law suits abound with this firm. I was in Costco last week and BTW their processed crab IS from Alaska and so states “a product of the Alaskan Fishing Industry.” So if you want crab parts, go to Costco, or I think Maverick web site now has a line of packaged crab.
What also surprises me is the fact that this is a conflict of interest with the Alaskan Industry and most likely with Original Productions and Discovery Channel. Dare I mention it–a breech of contract. I have little doubt that all of the boats touted receive generous stipends and have contracts that reflect their committments to this program. (if you do not, give me a call & we will see if we can improve the situation) It would appear that Mr. Hansen, et al, has bitten the hand that feeds him! For someone to go off and endorse the opposition, then have the cajones to come back and make a public statement that says they were trying to up public awareness of said industry is, to say the least , a huge pile of bovine elimination! The Northwestern could very well find itself on the cutting room floor.
Kudos to you, Phil Harris, John Hillstrand and any other fishermen that had the integrity to just say no. If you’re ever in San Pedro look me up and we’ll do an interview on my little show.
Have a blessed holiday season, boys, safe journey and keep the shinny side up. GO’M

Sounds simmilar to Australia.you want your fellow countrymen to have jobs, not everything has to be imported from overseas.Never tried “King Crab” look forward to trying.Anyway i’m an Electrician and your Channel lock pliers are the best (but you already new that, made in U.S.A)
November 22nd, 2007 at 10:12 pm
I think & believe, Alaska is one of our states to believe in & stand by no matter what!! This free trade stuff is the shits. China toys are being recalled, our tools are made everywhere but here in America. Our jobs are over seas. Fishermen, people of ALL states, stand up & be counted & don’t back down. For just ONE can make a difference on this and many issues. Count me in, all of you fishermen! I won’t be shopping Walmart anymore!
November 22nd, 2007 at 10:08 am
It will be interesting to see how this plays out. I know I’ll be waiting and watching.
November 22nd, 2007 at 9:30 am
Dont be so hard on sig, The US government sells out the american catte industry every day when they stamp “USDA APPROVED” on foreign beef.
November 22nd, 2007 at 8:58 am
i recently visited a new walmart that just opened up in our area. this is a huge store that is bigger than most super walmarts. as i walked down the seafood isle looking for alaskan salmon, i saw a box in the frozen cooler with a picture of the northwestern on it. i crabbed the box of king crab legs and like most others i did not read the box until i got home. as soon as i read russian product and not alaskan crab i went back to walmart and took it back. the manager asked me why i wanted to bring it back and i said you sell imposters. this is totally wrong. i just bought a new truck and i had a big white sticker put on it that says buy alaskan crab only,i support the united states fishing industry. later that day my friend robin bought one and called me, she took her box of crab legs back as well. we support the fisherman that did not get taken in by the offers. good for you. but as for captain sig he just lost the respect from a lot of people for a bad decision. so continue to buy alaskan seafood and remember read the labels.GO ALASKA……thanks
November 21st, 2007 at 11:26 am
Kudos to Lynn and her comments. She was writing while I was contemplating on what to write. So quick are a lot of people to judge others without all of the facts. I still think that the Northwestern is a hard working ship and crew and respect the danger that they put themselves in every season. I am from a blue collar family, work in a union shop, my father and brothers are union men. Again, I agree with Lynn - read the labels. Buy made in USA when ever possible. If you don’t like Walmart practices, boycott. Stand in front of the store and pass out information to other less informed customers. My belief - to judge is wrong - to educate is right.
Be safe to all the crews at sea.
November 21st, 2007 at 11:26 am
At least you can take solace in the fact that this community (Kodiak) supports you and admires you for not selling out!
Hope you have a good season, be safe.
November 21st, 2007 at 10:24 am
I can’t condone a “sell out”,but does anyone really think this is the first time anyone sold out the US, when it comes to commerce? I think the whole thing s*cks, but think of one country that someone hasn’t sold us to, pretty damn hard to do. IF people are REALLY as smart as they think they are & actually READ a label they’d know what theyr’e buying.
I don’t even eat seafood but I was taught right from wrong & TO READ before you buy. So ifsomeone buys the Russian crab thim\nking it’s Alaskan crab, shame on them for not reading the damn label. With all the other crap going on with imports you’d think people would wise up!
Good for Phil, John ( & Andy)! they deserve our respect for their values as do other Captains out there. They ALL deserve our prayers for their safety, good, bad or indifferent
What Sig did wasn’t fair but, is there a explanation behind it? We do get sold out everyday,so we should be used to it. Wrong IS wrong, but this godd old land of ours also has to change laws & actually stick to them &have the cajones to go after the REAL bad guys that DO over fish the waters & hurt our commerce.
Hope all goes ALOT better Opi season!
I hope someone actually gets my point. Lynn
November 20th, 2007 at 8:05 am
This just shows that the love of money leads to a total lack of integrity. I couldn’t be prouder of Cornelia Marie and the Time Bandit for not selling out to these poseurs! Phil, you and your family and crew have always struck me as honest, straightforward, and real. I am totally disappointed that Sig and the rest of the Hansen’s would do this kind of damage to the Alaska Crab industry. I know you guys must be getting ready to fish or are already out. Please don’t think that everyone who watches won’t hear about this and lose all respect for the Northwestern, we will. Please be safe, stay focused, and take care of one another. We will all be waiting for the shows from this years adventures. Thank you Captain Phil and family, for having the good character not to be involved in this deceit. It won’t go un-noticed by fans of the show.
November 19th, 2007 at 7:23 pm
I lost all respect for the Hansen family when they started selling underwear on their website. This doesn’t surprise me. Despite all their talk about family heritage and fishermen’s values, MONEY TALKS.
Methinks that maybe Sig and the gang are a bit too full of themselves if they see nothing wrong with this.
Just my opinion.
November 17th, 2007 at 9:30 am
The issue is very simple. We don’t need the spin doctors to explain it. You have standards or you don’t. You don’t put your name, your ship and your family history on an inferior product from a country that does not honor its citizens, the enviornment or conservation. And, you certainly do not partnership with Walmart, the flagship of corporate greed in America. Using the celebrity gained from being on a great show like The Deadliest Catch to make money in this fashion is unacceptable. Phis is right–this really does stint.
November 17th, 2007 at 1:28 am
Yeah, this is quite the heated issue over at BBBS. and it’s a real disappointment. Now, I guess we just have to wait and see what this all comes to. I bet it’s going to get a whole lot worse before it gets better. I sure am glad you turned them down. I would’ve had to have found a new favorite TV show.
November 16th, 2007 at 8:17 pm
Well this stinks to high heaven and I have been hearing of this down here in California lately. I hope it gets taken care of damn soon and I am right behind you and will pass the word on. Good luck and keep on the crab guys!
