A Hero’s Journey
I came across a well written blog about the Deadliest catch I would like to share with you. The author of the blog only goes by the initial “b”, but is obviously a good writer. You can view her blog about the Deadliest Catch here. http://accordingtobreal.blogspot.com/
One of the most interesting aspects of the show to me is the fact that the show appeals to such a wide group of people. According to our web stats, we have been visited by more than 48 countries and every state in the union. I hear from every person you can imagine; from U.S. soldiers fighting in IRAQ to young girls wanting to know more about Jake and Josh. However, there does seem to be something everyone has in common. Respectfully, honest, hardworking - good people.

Lynn,
I know boys really aren’t that important, but i feel like if i dont get use to go out with guys then when i grow up i wont be used to go out then i’ll never get married, and i want to get married. O.K. i know i said i wanted to stick with detasseling but me and my sis could’t take how much u hurt while on the job, we have all these red dots all over us ( corn rash ) and they itch more than poison ivy, or poison oak, and i have a crater in my foot, lol, and im very tired all the time and sore, and i CANT STAND all the stupid bees and bugs out there. so we quit detasseling on Friday, we r still going to get payed just not as much as our brother will. There was a HUGE storm last night, and the tornado sirens went off so i woke up and my brother and mom and dad were alreally up getting ready for work, and my sis was at a friends house, and so i was texting my sister, and the storm finaly went away, then i went back to bed, it was about 5:30 when i woke up from the storm then i went to bed again at 6:25. then woke up again at 8:59. well since my brother works now and i dont i let him borrow my iPod ’till his work is over so he isn’t has bored. well i have to go now we have to go pick up my sister at her friends house, o-yeah do u have an e-mail address i want to send u a pic of me!!

Hannah, never fear your time will come to meet someone. You have your whole life ahead of you, yeah I realize boys are a big part of growing up,but, they’re not everything! Stay the sweet young lady that you seem to be.There’s always someone when you least expect it.
Hope everything else is going well with you.Been really hot out here lately, had very little rain today. The storms seem to go around us & hit North like up by NYC.Swimming alot, reading the Time Bandit book. So far it’s quite funny & it’s very hard to put down! Hope the CM guys write a book or something. That’d be great! 12:05 am time to turn in.
Talk to you soon,Lynn nj

Hannah I now understand, but how do you tell male from female? Sounds like a back breaking job, good thing it pays well. It’s gonna be in the 90’s the next few days here. Just what we need, good for the beaches though. Not good when I have to get throgh the mobs to get to the grocery store. Can’t get anywhere for that matter. I need to live somewhere alot simpler! It’s a rat race in the summer.
I’ll get back to you soon! LOL,Lynn nj

Lynn,
O.k. detasseling is in a cornfield, do u know wahat a tassel is?? if not u wont understand what detassleing is!! u go up and down corn rows and pull off tassels on the coen stalks, but only off the female corn stalks, not the males. it kinda sucks, but im use to it, and im goingt o stick with it cuz i need the money. me my sis and my bro have to get every morning at 5:00 to be at the bus stop at 6:00 so the bus leaves at 6:15, to go pick up other poeple then we go detassle. then we get home whenever we get done with however many cornfields we do a day. ( which is about 12:30 ) and no i never found my glasses, cuz u never go up or down the same rows. Yeah the weather here was off and on rain for awhile, but now it’s sunshine!! well i cant wait till the new episode, it really does suck that this season is over but im still ganna get on this website.lol well ttyl.

I got home from Detasseling about 2 hours ago ( 4:40 ). And man am i way more tired and wore out than i thought i would be. It is so hard but it’s really good pay and my boss ( i cant believe i have a boss )lol, said that 2day was going to be the hardest day that would work. and e said that once you really get the hang of things then it woont be that hard, well i got the hang of things at the end of the day, so 2morrow should be kinda easy for me. I also lost my glasses at the beginning of the day, i had to follow the rules if i didn’t want to be fired, so i had to put my safty glasses on and take off my other ones and they fell out of my pocket. Anyway it was a very hard and LONG day but i got through it and im going again 2morrow, as hard as it is, im going to keep going, i need to learn in life to push myself so im not suck a wimp when i get older. Well i hope ur day was dry, colder ( than my day ), and more fun. ttyl

Lynn,
I had to get on here 2nite to tell u that the detasseling place me and my siblings sighed up 4 called last night, and said we r starting on Sun. so i wanted to tell u that i will still beable to talk to u but it might not be as much as it is. Detasseling is hard i know and im only 13, ( Crab fishing is WAY harder ) but im only 13 and this is my first job ( duh ) lol, im kinda excided but so many people i talk to say that it sucked. But only do it for the money and the work out that comes with it, lol. it’s only a 3 week job and only in the summer but it will pay good money. Wish me luck, lol!! I need the money to get clothes and put A LOT of minutes on my phone, and to go places. But i was only going to take out $200.00 for the clothes and minutes and to go places, the rest goes in my account. Well i’ll get on here 2morrow 2 see if u have typed back, i’ll get on here a lot but it will be later at night. Well ttyl!!!!!!!!!!!

Lynn,
I just got back from my bff’s house. I spent 2 nights at her house, now she is coming over ( i think ) later and she is going to spend 2 nights over here. We r really keeping in touch! lol. Anyway i have been waiting on a call from this detasseling place, i sighed up to do detasseling a while ago but they haven’t called yet, my brother and my sister also sighed up. We have had some crappy weather for about a week, just like rain and thunder. but i want to go to Dragon Land ( city pool ) with my bff, or my sister. Me and my sister r very close, we tell eachother EVERYTHING, same with my bff. OMG when i was at my bff’s house we were singing a song with a really high pitch chorus part and in the song u have to hold that note like forever, lol, and we both can do it now, we praticed forever, and my bff has 2 older stepbrothers and one of them was listening cuz we were in the living room and he said we sounded really good when we sing together. Anyway, Well i’ll keep looking on this website for u. But i have to go now, so i’ll get on here probably 2morrow or the next day.

Hey Hannah!!
Hope you & family had a great weekend! Rainy here, stayed home, same old thing. Watched the fireworks from NYC & Washington on tv. Visited our neighbors (for the fireworks). That was my big day. Been having rain on & off all weekend! Hasn’t kept the tourists away though. We only have 2 ways North & South here one’s the parkway & one’s rt. 9 both were parking lots this afternoon. So we local folks stay home & stay off the roads! The shore traffic’s been horrendous since Memorial Day here. Can’t wait to go away from here to Maine to our camp.
Nearly midnight. Wanted to say hi. Hope all’s well.Talk soon, Lynn nj

Lynn ( a true friend ),
No i didn’t know Time Bandit had a book out the kinda interesting. I now have a job!!! I’m only 13 but my mom and dad said that i can detassel so my bro and sis r going to do it with me, and we will get A LOT of money for only 3 weeks of detasseling. I really hate every poisionous plant, they all really itch and i hate them ALL. lol. yeah i do agree moms ( sometimes ) know best lol, j/k!! I really hope my brother has finaly learned that lesson, even though he keeps doing it, he 16, and has a A LOT of friends that do the stupidest things, and of course he always there. I dont like it, im the one that has to listen to them fight all the time:-( Anyway I hope u feel WAY better, i dont like it when people ( or animals ) hurt, i am a BIG animal person. I LOVE horses. Yeah i saw the show I never miss one!!! I really hope Phil can go back on the boat, it wouldn’t seem right without him. I feel reeally bad for jake and josh to have to see thier dad hurt like that. I saw in the show last night that jake was kinda crying. I dont blame him at all i would cry too. ( to tell the truth he was cute when he was all teary eyed ) lol. I’m a girl i had to say that. lol, I have to go to my bff’s house 2morrow cuz shes having a 4th Of July party, i cant wait to go. Well ttly!!

Lynn,
It’s o.k. that u haven’t writen back, i understand, i want u to get better!!Dont feel bad that u haven’t typed back!!!I talk to my bff eveyday ( we text eachother all day) lol. i still cant believe she moved though:-( Yeah u r right A Hero’s Journey says something about jake & josh at the bottom. lol. I love talking 2 u, it’s like another really good bff!! OMG soooo much has happend to me since we last talked. I went to my bff’s house and we went down in the creek and there was poision ivy or somehing down there and i got it and it turned into something else so my mom took me to the doctor and he said it is more of a rash of some kind, but it iches like crazy!!! and that was like 2 weeks again and i still have it. Also my dad got a BIG raise at his work, so we can do way more now. And my brother got really big trouble by my parents and now cant drive untill he’s 18 ( as my mom said ). there was a big storm that came through here awhile ago and my dad was driving homefrom work in it and it was so bad he had to stop at his brother’s house so he wouldn’t get hurt. Well it’s lunch time and im kinda hungry so im going to go get something to eat.:-) ttly

It’s great to know that good, honest, hard working people can still make it and you can get away from the “cookie cutter” society. Reminds me so much of dad and my grandfather and what they gave me.

Thanks JPo. Your comment really means a lot to me! My feelings about the show truly are heart-felt. I’m increasingly amazed at just how deeply the show effects me. I was able to meet Andy and Johnathan Hillstrand last weekend at a book signing. Both are amazing… authentic, sincere. Johnathan is very symbolic (as the book reveals) and that resonates so much for me. I grew up in the suburbs and went to grad school to study literature and rhetoric. Despite this seeming incongruence, I feel absolutely connected to the guys in the show. We’re a diverse group of fans and I love to hear how the show effects others beyond the surface. Thanks again!

You write beautifully, b and I thoroughly enjoyed reading your blog. I also agree with The Boog. This show does touch people more deeply than many people know. It was wonderful to see the depth of that insight expressed so accurately and in such a heart-felt way.

Thank you so much for linking to my blog, Morgan. I appreciate your thoughtful remarks. My love for the show and these men that I speak of on my blog is very real. I have a lot of respect for what they do and how authentic they are. It is great to witness the variety of fans, how diverse we are and yet united through watching the Cornelia Marie crew (and the other crews) do their thing.
By the way, I love your website… very well designed and managed. I look forward to returning regularly for updates and insights on the Cornelia Marie! Thanks again.
Thanks also to The Boog. That is another interesting aspect: how the show touches us in deeper ways than the crabbers might have initially imagined.
Cheers,
b

That was a great entry and I wholeheartedly agree with what they are saying. This show touches people much more deeply than I think the crabbers sometimes know.
