Article explains how Captain Phil nearly died this season

“In a scene to be shown later this season, a monster wave pummeled his boat in January, causing him to fall out of his bunk. He punctured a lung and broke his ribs. But his condition worsened after a blood clot dislodged from his leg and traveled to his heart.”

Read the full article here. I think the premiere episode debuts in the United Kingdom and Canada today. Do you folks already know what is going to happen (from the internet) or do you wait to watch the episodes as they come out?

To make it simple Phil is a man to respect. But if he ever pulls some shit like that again we should meet him at Dutch Harbor and kick his ass.

    Captain Phil and sons,

I am so glad to see that you are doing well Phil. You remind me alot of my father who passed away too young. Remember that you are more important to those boys then fishing. You are in our thoughts and prayers. Oh and good work on two good looking and hard working boys! :)

    Michelle

  5. Suzanne Thomas Says:

Dear Phil,I am glad to hear you are doing better.  Being out at sea with a blood clot had to be a very scary experience.  I missed you on the boat the last couple of episodes, but it is very apparent just how much you care for your sons and crew members.  I love the sea and all of her different moods but at the same time I respect her also.  I live in southern Alabama where Hurricane Katrina came through, and I can’t imagine a Hurricane with snow and ice.  I have worked with patients on the medication you were talking about on the show and I understand just how serious it is, but I hope the your health will continue to get better and maybe one day return to the Cornelia Marie. I am hooked on DC it does not matter if it is a rerun I will still watch it. I know alot of women have told you that you rock, so keep on smiling at the camera. And I bet ten years ago you never thought you would never have a film crew on your boat.  My thoughts and prayers will be with you and your sons. Take care of yourself.
    Always,
    Suzanne

  8. Kerrykatz4 Says:

PS…Josh ROCKS. That had to be hard for him to confront you on this, but he stepped up like the man you raised him to be. God Bless all of you.

  9. Kerrykatz4 Says:

Captain Phil, may God be with you and your family during this hard time. I and my family are praying good hard Baptist prayers for your health and speedy recovery. America loves you, and you are in so many peoples prayers. Take care, take those meds, and God bless you and your family. We love you here in San Diego, CA. God Bless and keep you.

  13. Jennifer Bishop Says:

Being in Canada I am not sure what is airing in the US right now or if the season is already over but it was at the end of Tuesdays episode that it showed
Phil in distress. My poor ten year old broke into tears, so here I am souring the interent to find out what happened. Thank God you are okay, and my daughter is even happier than I! She has watched every episode from every season and she affectionately she calls you “her Phil” and I was very happy to tell her that “her Phil” will be okay and that she can watch the rest of the season.

  14. Cindy Says:

    Phil,

I watched the “After the Catch” at least 3 times since it aired to be sure of everything I heard!!! I am very worried about you and how well you are doing. Please do exactly what the doctors tell you to do the world is a much better place with you in it. I got pretty choked up the first time I watched the chat. It was even more apparent as to the love you have for your boys and the pride you have for the work your boys do. Being a mother myself and having has a similar scare myself (embolism vs, aneurysm) but I cannot imagine what it felt like to walk back to the boat and talk to your boys like it was the last time!! You and the boys are in my thoughts everyday and hoping I will see you back for the next season!

BTW-Murray has been fun to watch run the boat but you are the Captain forever in my eyes. Please promise to be careful, Phil! This was a hard season to watch for many reasons and you are the biggest for me. It was good to have a new perspective on the show in that not everyday is GREAT fishing as you all have said many times.

If you ever sell your bird feeders I would definitely by one. Just let em know how to go about getting my hands on them (gifts baby!!!)

  15. Amber Says:

Deadliest Catch is the only show my husband and I agree on watching, we both love it. I was terribly saddened when I watched After the Catch this week and go the update on Phil’s health. I really hope that this passes and he can go about his business. Phil you are in our thoughts, and very much missed on the show. By the way, you should consider selling your birdfeeders, I would probably buy one. :)

  16. Redwing Says:

I can not believe this 65 year old Great Gradmother spends hours a week watching this show! I love it!
Now we all know Phil makes bird feeders when he is not fishing, how about a few pictures to show us?
Best of heath and fishing to you all

  17. Vilma Kovitch Says:

After watching the past few episodes, everyone in my family is rooting for you. You are in our prayers. I know a bit about being stubborn, and in the end you’re left with Woulda, Coulda, Shoulda…..Please take care of yourself. The Cornelia Marie is our favorite fishing vessel with one hell of a crew as well as ONE HELL OF A CAPTAIN. Phil, if you promise to do everything the doctors tell you and get over this, I will send you a drawing of my favorite captain et al., done by yours truly.

    Take care

  18. Elora Malat Says:

Seeing that episode and the others afterward, I was very scared that you’d croak before you got into the harbor. You should have gone right in! My mom and I love the show and we love your boat as well, so we were very worried about you (and still are). Please don’t drink no more Red Bulls (I lost my taste for them and I like Monsters, better) and make sure you move around a bit when you do go back on the boat. Also, do make sure you get something to eat while you’re on board as well.

  19. Jeanette Says:

Please have your doctor check you out for anti-thrombin 3 deficiency - it could save your life. Conventional blood thinners don’t always work on a clot if you have this inherited blood disorder (a possibility of you have a family history of blood clots and are of Norwegian descent.) If you get a clot that isn’t resolved by using heparin, you may need a transfusion of antithrombin 3 concentrate. Also, if you have this there is a 50/50 change that your sons have it too. A simple blood test to check your anti-thrombin level can tell you if you’re at increased risk for more blood clots. Hope you are doing better!

  20. Frank Siegfried Says:

Phil, I know first hand what you and the rest of the boats do in the Bearing Sea. While in the Coast Guard in the early 80’s, I was stationed abord the USCGC Jarvis, WHEC 725. You and I have sailed the same seas, visited the same ports and fought the same storms. My hat goes off to you and your crew for what you do. If I was there, I would buy you and your crew a beer, lemonade for you because of your health.LOL
Best of luck to you, stay dry and for God’s sake stay safe.

  21. Jean and Mary Grimshaw Says:

My husband and I love your show. You have been blessed to do the work you love. My husband is x-Navy and understands the danger of open seas. We lift you up in prayer that your health will be restored, and God will bless you with a long life. Love, Jean and Mary from Vacaville

  22. Lisa Says:

So glad your doing well! Your in my prayers for a full recovery and LONG life on the boat with your boys!

  23. Sharon Kelley Says:

    Captain Phil,
You have always been my favorite captain and my heart was breaking to see you near death. I am very happy to know that you are recovering and I just have one request. Please stop smoking. I know you have heard this many times before, but I can tell you from experience that it is killing you. There are new pills out there that are very affective. Phil I watched both of my parents die because of smoking. It really destroys your body.
I sincerely hope that you do well and I will keep you in my prayers.

  24. Lynn Pedrano Says:

    Dear Capt. Phil,
After watching DC from the start its hard not to become emotionally attached to you, your boys and the crew of the F/V CM. You all have stolen a little bit of my heart. Recovering from an illness can sometimes be harder than having the actual illness and it always takes longer than you think to recover. Hang in there and I will continue to keep you and yours in my thoughts and prayers. After all, you do have a reputation to uphold. As I recall it was Jake who stated “you’re a hottie with a naughty body “. That quote makes me laugh every time I hear it and I am looking forward to more quotes and pearls of wisdom to come. Take care and consider yourself hugged and kissed.

  25. Michael Kelley Says:

    Hey Phil,

Glad your OK. I’m sure it was scary being out to sea and spitting up blood. Blood clots are a bitch! I got injured out work and have constant pain from permanament nerve damage. As a result I can’t work, nor do anything else. So I know the feeling being told you may not be able to return to work. In my case, it became a reality. I hope in your case you have a complete recovery! I love Deadliest Catch. I watch it almost every day (repeats!). And even though I’m watching from the couch, from which I can barely get up from, I find myself fantasizing I’m on the deck of the Cornelia Marie crab fishing. I really think I could have been a greenhorn for ten, maybe fifteen, minutes before you would have thrown my ass off your boat.

Please take care of yourself. At least cut back on the cigarettes. You don’t want to end up like me. It’s no fun, and not much of a life, viewing the world from the couch. I know you wouldn’t like it.

Thanks for giving me, and all your fans, a little excitement by letting us tag along (safely from home) on the Cornelia Marie.

    Mike from WV

  26. Suzi Says:

    Phil -

By now, I’m guessing that the very worst of your experience has passed and that you’re well along in your recovery. I suffered nearly the same series of events (at a much smaller scale) at nearly the same time. In late February, I noticed swelling, accompanied by pain, in one leg. Went to emergency, where I was diagnosed with a clot, given anticoagulants, and sent home. A few days later, I was just sitting on the sofa when I got dizzy, lightheaded, and had chest pain. I was sure it was a heart attack. Went back to emergency and found that clots had found their way into both lungs. The difference was that I’m not a smoker (anymore) and that I didn’t have broken ribs or punctured lungs. Actually, I felt fine once I realized it wasn’t a heart attack. Five months later, I’m still on anticoagulants and am going for blood tests every week or two.

As a former 3-pack-a-day smoker, though, I’ve gotta say - this is your big chance to quit, and it may well be the voice of the sending a not-so-subtle message that it’s time to make a change.

One last thing - your talk about mortality (while you were still on board the Cornelia Marie) was really moving. I think that’s the gift that these events provides - they serve as reminders that we need to keep our priorities in perspective.

And one other last thing - I really admire Josh’s devotion to you. He was terrific even before your health faltered, but when the going got tough, he really stepped up, and we all love him for that. He, Jake, Murray, and the whole crew are fabulous guys, and we are really enjoying getting to know you through Deadliest Catch.

  27. Pat Moss Says:

Dear Phil: I have so much respect for you as a dad and a hard working person…From what I see is that you are a single dad,and you and your kids have a good relationship…I am a mom with five children…But one of my sons has passed away, and he is the one that got me started watching the show..I pray that your health will be put into check and that you have good care…Having this terrible time on your ship made me feel bad for you and your crew as well as your children…Now I see that you are on the mend…God bless you,Darlin..Peace be with you and good luck on your next trip to the Bering Sea…Your faithful fan,Pat Moss

  28. Deb in Oklahoma Says:

Being a worrier, I finally gave in to the anxiety and decided to read the full story before the last episode aired. Hey, Phil’s MySpace page is great, but don’t forget about us Facebook people! BTW, thanks, Bonnie R., sounds like you do a lot to help Phil. Speaking of Phil, Oklahoma City would welcome a visit, but it’s damn hot here this time of year!

  29. Kat and Ben Says:

Have to say I (Kat) was very scared for Phil and winced in pain right along with him as I watched the episode. I honestly cried when he said he felt totally alone even as the phone or radio was going off and his friends were calling. We missed last nights episode… Hope to see it Sunday so I can find out what went on. We have alot of respect for each and every guy out there fishing like ya’ll on D.C. do. I’ll keep saying my prayers that Phil comes through this and is able to continue doing something he really seems to love. Phil you really are a tough guy!!!! Thanks for the great show.

    Another huge fan in TN.
    Kat and Ben

  30. Michelle Says:

Hello there Captain Phil of the Cornelia Marie take care of yourself and God bless you and your family and crew and i hope to see you next time on the show . your fan always from Springfield,IL land loving;) :)

  31. Vickie Says:

    Phil,

Ever since I began watching the show the Cornelia Marie, you and your crew were my favorites. I never miss a show and was really upset when you became so ill. I knew you had survived, Thank God, because you appeared on the After the Catch programs but tonight’s episode showed me the extent of your injuries. My boyfriend of 20 years had a heart attack caused by a blood clot. He was in the hospital and told to stay put in bed. However, being the tough guy he was he got up to go to the bathroom and that’s where they found him dead of a massive heart attack. That was 10 years ago. It took a long time to get over the grief his passing caused to me and my kids.

Please take care of yourself and stick around, not only for your fans, but most importantly for your sons. They may be grown, but they will always need dear old dad. My kids are also grown and I sometimes wonder what they would do without me.

  32. Kate from Nebraska Says:

We are so glad you are doing better Phil. We have watched the show from the beginning and we love all of you guys. Please stop smoking! My husband had a heart scare earlier this year and quit smoking that day. He is a year younger than you.

We are praying for your continued good health and success. You are lucky to be alive. Come to Nebraska! We will do some barbeque for you. We can sit around the campfire and tell stories!

  33. Jerramye Says:

Talk about “heart-in-my-throat”! Phil, you scare me. :) I’m sure this knowledge will truly make you change your life-style (yeah - right), but I can’t keep myself from saying it anyway.

Hay, we’re talking about someone who now checks the weather forecasts throughout both crab seasons - saying prayers for you all when it looks like the weather is really bad (& I live near the Gulf of Mexico - maybe I just want to think about COLD weather for a change). Hummm . . .now, should I pray harder so you don’t get hurt at all - or was it the many prayers so many pray for your safety what kept you alive in the first place???

  34. Jen Says:

Phil, I’m glad you’re feeling better. Take care of yourself.

    Raising a Red Bull,

    Jen in Oklahoma

  35. Katherine Says:

Phil would you please take care of yourself? I saw the show last week, you going to the hospital, and i just knew it was lung cancer. Thank god it isn’t. I smoke too and know how hard it is to quit so no lecture from me. We all love you Phil so please lay off the red bull, smokes, take your meds we want you around for a long time to come.

  36. Kathie Says:

Phil, please take care of yourself, it seems pretty unanimous here that we all feel the same and all are praying for you. You are also my fav capt and have been right from the get go. Please take care and get well, we all know that God will be with you and watching over the CM crew out there with out their leader. Josh is one heck of a son and your crew is one in a million, one more reason to get well and stay well. God’s speed in your recovery and we will all continue to pray for a full and swift recovery.

  37. Alicia Pepper Says:

That was something Phil. I’d swear at you, but something tells me I shouldn’t…

Still, how could you not go to port? How could you put Jake through all of that? Money’s important, but not that important. You should’ve taken better care of yourself, then Murrey wouldn’t be driving the boat, there wouldn’t be a new deckhand, ugh. That is so messed up.

And Josh? He looked mad! That was funny, he was right, but it was funny seeing him yell at you for a change. I would’ve liked to see more of Jake in that episode and less of you without a shirt on for sure though.

And one more thing, can you please change your hair style? Please? I don’t like your new look. It’s so, how do I say this? Not you Phil.

Anyway, get better, stop being afraid of the doctor, take care of yourself, NO self destructing, give Jake your credit card…I’m praying for you to get better Phil!

  38. June Says:

I watched last night’s episode when you got sick and thought I was going to cry. I could not wait til next week to find out what the prognosis was and even though it was not good at least it was not lung cancer. I just quick smoking two months ago after 35 years and sure wish you and yours would too!
You guys sure know how to entertain a girl on tuesday nights!!!! God Bless and get well soon!!!!!

  39. Christina Says:

Hey Phil, love the show and sat on the edge of my seat the whole way through. You have two terrific sons and I’m glad you decided to get checked out!

  40. Eric Says:

Been there done that and i know just how you feel.

I went in for very common knee surgery and four days later i had a clot in my leg and 4 days after that i got pulmonary embolisms.

Me being stupid ,pig headed and very stubborn i wrote it off as a cold or something and didn’t go to the hospital tel the neck day.

Of course i got blackmailed by my better half and went to my doctor (who wasn’t in and the one who was wrote it off without doing anything)

Fortunately the nurse didn’t agree and suggested i go to the hospital (shockingly i took her advice).

They sent me in for a xray and i have never seen a xray tech run out of a room that fast…lol.

Its a wake up call and a horror but you shall bounce back although it takes loads of time.

Get better and take better care of yourself phil.

  41. Lynn Says:

I never miss an episode, and you are in my prayers as well. I had multiple pulmonary embolisms in both lungs several years ago. Couldn’t breath, couldn’t move. It’s terrifying. I’m still around, I take my meds, and keep on going. There is plenty of life afterwards - just take care of yourslf. No one is ready to let you go yet!

  42. Freeman (Med Student) Says:

I have one question regarding your diagnosis (after the comment)

Phil, I just read about your illness (after watching the episode). Several of us students were sitting around watching it, and about the time you coughed up blood we were like “GET OUT OF THERE GET TO THE HOSPITAL!” The differential for coughing up blood is huge, but given you had an injury immediately before then, the probabilities narrow. And given the outcomes for a lot of those probabilities, it is ALWAYS best to go immediately for an exam if you are coughing up blood. You read me sailor?

I am very sorry it happened, but VERY glad to hear you are recovering.

In the article I read about your injury they called it a “pulmonary aneurysm.” Was that correct or was it a “pulmonary embolism?” They were talking about you throwing a clot, so that makes me think “pulmonary embolism” more so than aneurysm.

Could you clarify that point? Because if it was a pulmonary aneurysm I am going to sit down with a pulmonologist and have him explain that one to me.

    Thank you Phil!

Take care sir & take care of your sons. You remind me much of my Father who is a Korean war vet & started/ran an engineering company. Tough. But loving.

  43. Irene E [in Maine] Says:

Hey, Captain Phil, I have been praying specifically for you this entire season. As I watched last week, I was concerned for you, But last night went beyond concern. I KNEW you were OK , having seen you on “After the Catch” last week. [considering the passage of time] I realize what we see, is long after it happens. I sat here last night with my heart in my throat, crying and praying. I am a PRAYER WARRIOR, so have held you continuously in prayer ALL SEASON. I am a mom of seven, so know what it’s like to put yourself aside, for the sake of others. My heart went out as you requested the camera man not say anything to your boys. [Your wanting to separate yourself from everyone...as your 'brothers' wanted to reach out to you...] So much talk about dying out there…. Honey, we are NOT READY OR WILLING TO SAY GOODBYE TO YOU ANY TIME SOON!! Take care of yourself. [though I know, you are a self-LESS person.]
I’d love to see some of your bird feeders sometime. God Bless you and Keep you!! You are one of the GOOD GUYS Prayerfully, RENIE

  44. The Merlo Family Says:

Last night’s show had me scouring the net to make sure you were alright! We are so happy and relieved that you are doing okay, and hang in there! Get well soon, and know that you are in our thoughts.

  45. mike Says:

    hi phil get well soon

  46. Tedd Says:

Wow. You are one lucky SOB Phil. I had a friend that died when a blood clot in her ankle became dislodged and travelled to her heart. One minute alive, the next second dead. On the good side though, a person can consider themselves fortunate if they have ONE person in their lives that loves them. You seem to be really fortunate in that you have a WHOLE CREW that loves and respects you. Kudos to Josh for taking care of you in your time of need. If I remember correctly he wasn’t always the most dependable of people but he seems to have matured and grown since he started crabbing. You should be proud to have a son like him, this season’s trials and tribulations have really made me a fan of his. Take care Phil, you have a lot to live for, don’t take it for granted.

  47. Kate Says:

Hi Phil. I confess I have quite a crush on you and I am happy that you are doing better. It saddened me that you felt so alone and scared on the boat, you are never alone, God is always with you.

Keep up the good work and stay healthy, I will be praying for you.

  48. Tom Says:

Hey Captain Phil and family. Your show brings back many memories of Crabbing on the Chesapeake Bay with my father. Yeah its nowhere near as dangerous as what you all go through, but it reminds me of being on the boat with my father, brother, and grandfather. Unfortunatly none of them are with us anymore. Please take care of yourself so your sons and later in life, your grandsons can have that experience. I would trade anything to have just one more day out on the water with them. You all are in our prayers, and we look forward to seeing you back to 100%! Thanks for making me remember the good, the bad, and at times the ugliness of family fishing.

  49. Robyn Says:

Phil! We’re thinking of you and hoping and praying for a full recovery. My husband and I are HUGE fans of the show and never miss it. It would not be the same without you.

  50. Fan From Massachusetts Says:

Ouch! I’m actually watching that episode right now!

That’s got to be tough having to suck it up and deal with it in the wheelhouse. You showed great strength by doing so. That showed us fans just how hard it is to fish in the Bering Sea.

Stay Strong! For the sake of your family, friends, fans and of course, most importantly yourself, take care of yourself! Be Healthy! Cigarettes won’t help! Please Take Care of Yourself! I’m praying for you!

  51. Crabby Patty Says:

Dear Captain Phil, you are my favorite captain, and I hope and pray that you will take good care of yourself. It was SO funny when you said in the article that the ratings would be good for Discovery if something happened to you…BWAH! You are very naturally funny! However, it would NOT be funny if something bad did happen because everyone loves you the best and watches the show mostly because of you. Also, don’t get mad, but PLEASE quit smoking so much!! Much Love!

  52. Chris Christiansen Says:

    Dear Phil,

The Cornelia Marie has three main powerplants. Two are below deck…. the other is in the wheelhouse. If an engine’s given much service in its lifetime, odds are that it doesn’t have quite the compression that it had when it was new. So it is with us ( especially if we’re over fifty!). So… just like one of your engines, take good care of yourself and wisely work the throttle.
In doing so, you’ll be around fishing for many more seasons!
P.S. Tell Josh that I think he’s one class act. Kids who care for their dad like that are few and far between! Also, have him write up his recipe for his grilled sausage sandwich and post it on the site.
    All the best!
    Chris

  53. Debbie Says:

Hi Captain Phil! I am a huge fan of the show and you are my favorite Captain…please start taking care of yourself!! The show wouldn’t be the same without you! Take care!!!

  54. Matt Says:

    Phil;

Well you sure had your share of rotten luck this season…Hope everything is better. “The hell you go through” Just watching you makes my hair turn white!!! what would a guy do without stress? right? ;o) Stay Safe, yourself and your crew and all the fisherman out there. Thank You for another great season.

  55. Jim Says:

Hey Capt Phil; I enjoy the show (it reminds me of my years in "Uncle Sams Canoe Club") and I appreciate the words of wisdom you try to pass on to your sons and the rest of the crew. Youve heard it before and Ill chime in, quit smoking man! I did and after a few weeks youll be amazed how much better you feel. Honest. (We worry about you out here in TV-land) Anyway, get better and I wish you and your crew fair winds and following seas!

  56. Mary Anne Says:

It has been a rough year for you! Hang tough, and take care.

  57. Lyn Dyer Says:

My wife and I had the pleasure of meeting Capt. Phil for the 2nd time at a boat show in San Diego a few weeks ago. It was then he told us about the blood clot he survived, he didnt mention getting a punctured lung, WOW. He is truley a stud. He seems to have recovered nicely and is really a down to earth guy, very entertaining too. We have a picutre of my wife with Capt Phil & Capt Larry(FVSea Star) hanging on our wall and everyone that comes to our house is soo jealous..lol.. We love you “Crabbers”, and Phil, please take care of yourself, God bless, Lyn & Kat Dyer

    thoughts and prayers with you,
    Julie H.

  66. Audrey Says:

I hope you are doing well, I heard about the blood clot and ribs, that is painful. I wish I could have taken care of you. If you were here in New York, I would have. Get well and take care of yourself, you are much too precious to waste.

  67. Scott Says:

Get well Capt. You guys are constant inspiration to for me to keep trying and never give up.

    Kim

Be safe and you are in our prayers. :)

  70. Brandii Says:

My daughter and i watch you guys constantly.. like every time the shows on.. even reruns.. she about cried when she saw you say that you couldn’t breathe.. had to get on the net to assure her that you would be ok.. take care out there.. but lifes too short not to do what you want.. you will be in our prayers.. love to you and your boys.

  71. Sicoli13 Says:

Hey Capt. Get well you make that show maybe if you sorround your bunk with a few of those sandwiches your son made you they would have broken the fall a little. Love the show safe seas!

  72. Beth Says:

Capt. Harris I’m so glad you are OK. I had to find out what happened to you. When you sat up and said you couldn’t breath, the nurse in me jumped off the couch and it hit me, I can’t help him. I know how your sons felt. My daddy died when I was 22. He had a massive heart attack. He was 58. He stopped breathing but did start back when I repositioned his head to start CPR. He died 2 hour later. He died happy doing things his way. He was very well liked and respected man just like you. You are the Captain and your sons are members of your crew. But most of all you are their daddy and can’t be replaced. So when you get tired of resting and taking pills and check ups, do it for them. Remember the hair cut? That’s got to be worth something. I’m 47 now. I lost momma when I was 39. There has been so much that has happened in my life that I wish they could have been a part of. Don’t rob yourself and your family of those times. Take care of yourself and give yourself time to heal. Your fans will miss you till you get back but nothing like your sons will. God Bless.

  73. Traci Says:

We watch every episode as they come out. I read about your illness on the web, but normally I just try to stay clueless. Last night, when the pre-teaser for the Opie season came on, they showed you saying you couldn’t breathe. You could have heard a pin drop in our livingroom- ipods came out of ears at lightening speed, Texting ceased on cell phones and gaming was paused on the computer- as they watched. I am glad that in this one instance I had warning about your illness so I could prepare my children. Even at 16 & 14 they are very attached to two captains- Capt. Phil and Capt. Sig. I wanted them to know ahead of time you were okay. We all know it will be a hard episode to watch. Thanks for sharing your life with us.

  74. catchfan3 Says:

Get well soon, Phil. We miss you and your sons on the show. Better bungee yourself in next time!

  75. Utility Lineman Says:

Good to hear you survived Phil. I know what its like to work very long hours and weeks, but not with a bouncing and rolling ship. We are also in the top ten of most dangerous jobs and I have already destroyed an ankle and have been mere inches from being burned to death. Have fallen off 50 foot poles and miracuously (sp?) fell on my feet and went unhurt. But no matter what happens I’m addicted to being back out there and being on a pole or in the bucket gloving 19,900+ volts. I enjoy the show as well and watch every week. I’m now permantely disabled due to a very bad spinal disorder but enjoy Tuesday nights and never mind watching reruns either. Get well and catch some more King Crab, my folks love it!

Got a question for you Phil if you ever reply to the people here. What has been the most amount of time you have stayed up and at the wheel? How about your longest work week? I’ve worked 40 hours straight on tornado restoration before and have worked 142 hours in ONE WEEK during an ice storm in Arkansas. Was just wondering how much yall truly work in a day or week ;-)

Josh from the great state of Alabama

  76. dantufariello Says:

hey phil, i didn’t see the show where you got hurt yet but i watch every episode every time it’s on take care of yourself and your familyand everybody on the boat, the first time i watched the show i fell in love with it, i feel like im there im 44 and have a bad back and my hip bones are dying and i need to quit smoking, hope you do it’ll help me to if i didn’t have the problems i do i would love to try and fish with you. i hope i can come there and buy all of you guys a drink before i get stuck in a wheelchair maybe 2008 season if all goes well take care lots of love dan from NJ.

  81. Jim Says:

Heheh, well Phil, you seem to have a few lady admirers. Better not let the wife see your site. Sorry to hear about your incident, hope you heal up soon. I enjoy watching the show. You remind me of some of the friends I have known over the years. You, Johnathan and Sig all seem familiar to me for some reason. Maybe because I live in the Pacific Northwest and hung around some of the dory fishermen from Cape Kiwanda when I lived in Hebo. Anyway, get well and keep on fishin’.

  89. Ben Says:

    Hey Captain,

I ran into Josh at Dick’s up on Holman Road. (listen to me, acting like I’ve know you and your sons all of our lives). He says you are doing better, and shared some other tidbits of info about the season with me, but I will keep them to myself and let the fans of the show watch everything transpire. Anyway, hope you get back to 100% soon, and hope to see you out on the road with the Harley this summer.

  90. cindy genc Says:

I also wish that I could me you, but you live to far away from me. I am from New Jersey, and I think you so cute. 93. Beccy Says:

Phil, I’ve been watching the show for two seasons now, and you seem to be very down to earth, a skilled captain, a caring father with a big heart and a mischievious streak and the type of person I’d be friends with if we actually knew each other. (Reality TV just makes me FEEL like I know you.) :-) My thoughts and best wishes are with you. Take care and get well soon! Beccy

  94. robin Says:

  98. Bob from NY Says:

    Phil,

I missed you on the show the other night and it bothered me so much I had to find out why. I suspected

past. Will keep you in my thoughts and prayers; keep us updated on your progress, please!!! You guys
    are like distant family members!

  102. Liana Says:

I try to not to look for the spoilers, but this time I couldn’t help myself! Keep taking your meds Phil - I know they’re a pain, but you need to! Broken ribs are no joke - at least you have a ‘good’ reason for breaking one - my dog (don’t ask! LOL) broke one of mine last year! Try explaining that in the ER! *grin* Take care of yourself … we’ll be praying for you!

  103. Darryl and Shannon Says:

my wife and I love the show, wouldn’t be the same without Phil. get the rest you need, so you can continue to fight the bering strait.

  104. Lori Fagan Says:

I watched last nights episode and noticed you were not there. I went on the internet and found this. I am genuinely worried Captain Phil. I hope you are going to be alright. You are my favorite captain and the Cornelia Marie is the most routed for in our home. When you had trouble connecting with the crab I was cheering for you to find them and you did. I was so happy. Most Dangerous Catch rules…makes me wish I had the guts and nuts to do what you do! Get Well Soon Phil! My son needs you…he loves crab and can eat pounds at a time!
    Cheers from the Fagan Family!

  105. fan of yours Says:

My husband and I watch you all the time and after the eposoide tonight I just knew something was wrong so I started hunting on the net to find out. My husband had a heart attack the last of April this year and last monday had a stent put and he still might have to have a pace maker. He said to tell you that he knows what you are going through and to hang in there things have to get better. We love watching you and your sons and hope to see many more eposoides. We will be praying for you and your family.

  106. Bonnie Says:

    Hey Phil,
Your fans care a lot about you. And we want you safe and healthy.
I love your witt, your one-liners,your sense of humor and your great smile.
Don’t ever change those things. But do try to change your health habits.
Listen to your Dr’s. We love you Phil and we want you around for a long time.
Will we be seeing a new sexy Phil for seasons 4 ?
From a number one fan in the Upper Midwest.
    Bonnie

  107. Aimee Says:

    Hi Phil.
Wow, I’m reading some of these lectures people are leaving you. I think what they don’t realize is that you are “Living”, you do what you love. Isn’t that something we all want? To do what we want & love….and to make a living of it. It seems that they don’t understand your passion.

It’s scary & dangerous on many levels. So is being a fire fighter or a police officer. Granted all on different levels, but all dangerous at any given time. I’m sure you have a Dr. & hopefully you won’t get bombarded with lectures by more “fans” as one put it. I’m sure most do it becasue they care, would I like to see you not smoke & drink all the bad stuff……yeah…….. but Phil….it’s your life. You’re a good & strong man & a good Dad. Awesome to have your boys with you at work.

Keep riding that Titan! It’s awesome…Phoenix awaits you!
Be well & God bless you, your family, your crew & the Corneila Marie.
    Aimee

  108. Hogan Says:

Captain Phil: Get a prescription for “Chantix” and also wear the nicotene patch. Everything happens in steps. Get the nicotene under control and then work on the alcohol. It is possible to enjoy the world without either.

Trust me, you of all people will not live much longer if you don’t. Your kids need you and the Discovery Channel is making $$ off you. They don’t love you like your family and neither do all these “fans.”

At the end of the day all you have is family and your health.

Give it up Phil—you’re too old to be playing and living a young man’s game. You can’t get away with it.

  109. Steve B. Says:

    Greetings Capt Phil and Crew:
I just want to say, Thanks- For doing a great job on “The Discovery Channels” Worlds Deadliest Catch!

Listen Capt.Phil, I know how a “Blood clot” feels, I had one lodge in my Lung last year and I spent the past 6 months taking “COUMADIN” to dissolve the damn thing! I am glad that you pulled through it.But Capt.Phil, this is not why I am writing to you, I am writing to you Capt. Phil is because you have 2 options: 1.Get busy Dying Or 2.Get busy Living ?

Capt.Phil, your on a show titled “Worlds Deadliest Catch”- And what is ironic most of all is- It is not going to be the job that is going to kill you, What will is a Massive Heart from Smoking all of those cigarettes, Drinking all of those Red Bull Caffeine Drinks, and most of all your Stress! Do yourself a favor and think about yourself instead of Ratings!

Before long all of these Crabs are going to be Endangered just like everything else “Man” touches! But if you don’t change your life style you will be the first to expire! Capt.Phil- Get busy Living!- Give up all of that crap! I would like you to be around to continue to be “The Captain” of “The Cornelia Marie” and so would your Family!

    Sincerely, a concerned fan.

    Steve B.

    John

  119. Don Fowler Says:

I know what some bad water is like. Coming back from Nam on a gearing class destroyer we came into the tail end of a typhoon, our sister ship took some photo’s of us with our screws thrashing air one moment and the sonar dome fully exposed the next. I had to be strapped into the chair to stay on the radar scope. We had 300 seasick sailors around us, my cpo and myself were the only ones able to function. I love the show, I appreciate what you guys are doing. I only wish I had of known about what you do when I was young and able enough to be a part of it. It is the kind of thing I love doing. Get well Phil, then you know you gotta get back on the horse that threw ya. ; ^ )
    Don Fowler

  120. vito divittorio Says:

  121. Alexis Harrington Says:

Captain Phil, you are far too young to have this kind of thing happen to you. I’ve got six years on you and I want you around in my old age. ;-) Please take care–your boys and a world of people love and respect you. Thanks for all your hard work and initially agreeing to let Discovery film on the Cornelia Marie 4-5 years ago.

  122. Philly Fan Says:

Get Better Phil! You better take it easy!

  123. Pete Walton Says:

Wow, there had to be many anxious moments. Certainly hope that you’re on the mend and back on your feet — don’t know how we’d all get along with out you. Really like you and all the skippers you deal with. Hope all’s well. I’ll have to try and keep this from the guys at work. Three years ago no one in my shop watched the show, now I have eight guys hooked. BZ on a great show with a great captain on a good ship.

  124. Tess Says:

What Phil needs is a beautiful lady to stop him from falling out of the bunk, you can’t fall when you are blocked from doing so. She would be his barrier. Just kidding with ya. You take care of yourself Phil and listen to the Dr.s and boys take it easy on dad.

  125. The Boog Says:

That is some scary sh*t right there.

  126. Ellena Says:

Jesus, Phil! You’re giving us all quite a scare back here (East Coast). Take care of yourself. We’re praying for you!

  127. Heidi (the wal-mart insider) Says:

and to think everyone was blaming the red bull and cigarrettes.

  128. Rhonda Thaut Says:

Wow that is scarey. I guess I will have to macrame Phil as harness so he strap himself into bed. Hope you get feeling better soon Phil. Everyone I know is praying for you.
