Hope you are feeling better. You have a lot of people who are holding you close in prayer for you and your family.
If you’re hoggin’ it on your hog, safe journey. Safe Journey also for the Cornelia Marie while she’s on the sea.

Hello from Calgary, Alberta, Canada. Hey Phil, it’s great that your recovering, hopefully the blood thinner do the trick. My grandmother died at a very young age when a clot entered her heart. The body is an amazing piece of work, but also very fragile. Take care and get better soon. You are a great person with a great attitude, I really enjoy watching you on tv. And I too enjoy Red Bull!!
I’m very addicted to the Deadliest Catch, never miss an episode, it’s an awesome thing Discovery Channel has put together so that the rest of us can see what you guys go through so that other can feast on fantastic crab. And what it’s like on the Bering Sea. I live in a place with similiar winter condition, just not close to an ocean. We get the -30F temps with massive wind chill.
And Seattle, WA, great place to live, I’m American but now live in Canada. Many of my roots are from Seattle, my grandfather was born there, I still have many distant cousins living there, and I have a long line of fishermen in my family. My great-grandfather came from Sweden and settled in Seattle. So say “hi” for me to captains Jonathan Hillstrand and Sig Hansen, from one Scandanavian to another.
Keep up the great work, wish I could perform such a job!!
Dear Phil:
So very glad to hear that you are following the doctors orders, taking your meds, staying out of trouble so that you will be back on the boat next season. One of the episodes had me laughing so hard and I hope you were able to catch it this year when you were at home. It was of Jake “pole dancing” on the CM and the crew were cheering him on. Now I have connections to obtain a “real” pole that dancers once used in a city of 60 thousand just south of Seattle, that Jake can set up in his bedroom and dance to his hearts content, hahaha. Just let me know and I will start things moving with the code enforcement officers of this city and get Jakie his Pole!
Capt Phil. I hope that you get well real soon. A lot of people are praying for you. The show is so cool. I work secruity at a local Hospital and most of the TVs are on the show. This is all the way in South Carolina. Let us know how your doing and hope to see you back on the boat doing what you love to do….Thanks for the site
Dear Capt. Phil….I was very glad to see your on the mend. I know you’ve got a long road ahead of you, I hope you find the strength each day to continue your battle for recovery. Someone is definately looking out for you, take care of yourself. I love the show and I love how real you are. Best Wishes.
hey phil hope you get well soon, why dont you guys show us, the veiwers , when after you recive your pay checks i mean the big ones, like the $50.000 going and blowing it on something like a new car or truck, would be cool to see you guys in a regular world situation. im hooked on the show watch it all the time stay safe and keep up the good work…
Phil, Please take care of yourself and do exactly what the doctors are telling you to do. Your sons would not want to lose you. I lost my father in April 16th 1982 and I still to this day understand what it is to be with out a father… You are one of the very best crabbing captains that is on Deadliest Catch fer sure
Please tell your sons to make sure that you keep in the regiment of taking very good care of your self and quitting smoking and trying your very best to be stress free. In my opinion Deadliest catch wouldn’t be what it is today if you wern’t there. God Bless you and your family… I’ll pray that you get better and stay around long time for your sons…
Phil,,, I love ya dude,, but if you pick up another smoke I think I am gonna have to kick yer ass hun!@!!!!!!! I had a heart attack a cpl of yrs ago… Drs said I would have died had I not lost the 175 pounds i lost 2 yrs earlier and quit smoking,,,,,,, A blood clot is a blood clot,,,, You had an angel sitting on yer shoulder,,,,,, Quit that nasty habit, and spend the money youd save on your family, yourself, a bigger boat……… a two hour show!!!
Seriuosly,,,,, hang in there,,, Love you and the show dude!!!!
Dudes!
Phil - nothing more can be said that hasn’t been already. Keep doing what the doc says and I truly hope you can go back to the Cornelia Marie. I was disabled 7 years ago (am 42) and am unable to do anything of the things I love. It’s been a hard row to hoe, but I’m getting there. I’m learning new skills, new hobbies, new ways to entertain myself. So I *know* the fear, the lost feeling, the wondering and projecting into the future. I KNOW.
From what little we see on the show, you have the strength, the intelligence, the fortitude and the ingenuity to get through anything life throws at you. Trust me.
Never stop researching for better answers to the thrombosis problem. New therapies are coming out all the time for all health problems.
Josh - You are a *fine* (fine, not f.i.n.e.) looking man! Your strength of character and caring show through and trust me, your dad knows exactly what you’re made of - regardless of him being on board or not.
Jake - Keep the sense of humor. It’ll serve you well. I wish we knew more what pranks you pull!
To all of you! - I’d try to be the first to buy a calendar of DC Ink. Photos of the more “mixed company appropriate” tats you guys have. I’d bet the 3 of you have enough for 12 months alone! (I wouldn’t mind some of the less appropriate tats too!)
I just love watching the show, but more than that I love watching your spunk. You are one hell of a man. I wish you all the best. I too am sick I have lung dease. People keep asking me when are you going to quit smoking ? I was watching you the other night on after the show. When all of you are just talking. I noticed that you weren’t chain smoking. That gave me hope !! That I too can lay my cigarettes down. I know that you are very busy but just a email or autographed photo from you would mean the world to me. Keeping you in my prayers.

To vote, just go to Catch Central and there’s a lot of different things listed for you to do. I think it’s the second section on the left side of the page. It says vote for your favorite boat and crew. Click on that and it will take you to the voting page, you can rate every boat from 1 - 10. The C/M is the first boat to come across the screen and it’s taller than the others so make sure you can see the numbers at the top. It’s pretty self explanatory. We’re up to 6.8 but should be moving up pretty soon! I give the C/M a 10 and everyone else gets a 1 except for the Time Bandit, I just can’t give Jonathan less than a 5. LOL He really cracks me up!! It’s a lot of fun!
Captain Phil,
I too lost my mother to a pulmonary embolism she was only 53 and when it hit her lung she was dead with in an hour. You are a very lucky man that it was found and they figured out what it was. You and your family are in my prayers. I hope that all turns out well for you!!
This letter is for the fans of Capt. Phil & Crew. Get over and start voting your butts off for our Cornelia Marie to win the most popular boat & Crew!! We all know Phil is the best, so why is he third in points? I’m a corporate president and have tons of work to do but I always manage to get at least 10 votes a day in for these guys. It’s not hard and doesn’t take long!! Just do it!! Hey Phil, if you’re reading this (yeah, right!) take it easy and hurry back to the show. Even the crabs look sad on your boat!
chantix….i stopped smoking last jan. using chantix. i am off the chantix now and have been for a few months. if i can quit smoking, so can you. please do it for your children. hugs and love from michigan
Phil,
Do your best and fight hard. You have fought hard all your life making a great life for yourself and your boys. Don’t let anyone give you a bunch of b.s. about how you have to quit smoking and quit the red bull, etc. You know you have to but you have to do it your own way or it doesn’t work. I know. I quit smoking 2 years ago now and it is still hard not to pick one up when things get stressfull. And you have one hell of a stressfull job, I know I could never do it. It takes a very special kind of man to do your job. All the best to you Phil and I will keep you in my prayers.
By the way, I would love to meet you, we might hit it off. You have my email address I’m sure, so drop me a line.
Your boat didn’t get it’s fair share of air time on the 7/8 show!! I was pretty disappointed! I’m also sick of looking at that mean captain Keith on the Wizard!! That guy needs medication! Hurry up and get back to work, if you get cut and start bleeding just put some electrical tape on it!! Just kidding, but not really!!! You are truly missed!! Hugs from Michigan!
Dear Phil,
Don’t think anyone will ever read this. I do watch your show, felt so sorry for you. You’ve got a good crew plus two great kids. There young men really, maybe stepping aside till your better would be for the best. Just get better don’t know why I wrote don’t think your ever read this. Get well probably better now. Don’t know how old the tapes are. Keep fighting the fight.
I’m have been worried about Phil’s diet and his continuous smoking. Phil, this health scare is to wake you up and get healty! God has given you a second chance to be a dad, husband, and grandfather one day. Fishing is what you do with your life–it ISN”T your life. You can do anything as long as you are healthy. I have prayed for you and your crew. Enjoy watching.
Captain Phil and Crew….take care of yourselves guys. You have so many fans who watch you on a daily basis. Your job is so dangerous yet so many of us tune in to watch you put your lives in danger. Your bravery is admirable and I guess we live vicariously through you all. Many of us could NEVER do that type of job…God Bless you all and keep you safe.
Captain Phil….take care of yourself…you’re very important to a lot of us!!!!
Get well soon Capt. Phil. You’re the best! To bring you good luck I have you on my screensaver, I’m wearing my new Cornelia Marie tee that I bought off your website and I’m voting for you at least 10 times a day as favorite crew. I notice you just took a little jump up to 6.7, guess I’ll have to get back to voting more! LOL PLEASE hurry up and get back to your old self. I hope you come to Michigan sometime, I’d really like to meet you guys and get some pictures to hang in my store! Take care!!
Phil..Jake..Josh.. you guys are my idols. I am waiting to see a time where you all visit Illinois, especcially Jake. I am probably the only girl who is 16 that enjoys the show as much as I do. Seriously, you all light up my day, everyday. Phil, take care of yourself!! I cried when you went in to the hospital. Have you ever tried chew. I heard it’s easier on you but has bad effects just the same.
Well Capt, you sure know how to scare the bejeezus outta people don’t ya? So glad you are ok, you are one lucky son of a gun.
I truely hope and pray you understand just how much you are loved and needed now. I pray you can see all the things that can be lost so easy and so fast. Your friends and family don’t deserve to be robbed of your presence on this earth for the sake of something as selfish as stubborness or pride. I bet you’ve been told all this a thousand times by now but I had to say it to.
Remember Captain and never forget that not everyone gets a second chance, make the best of yours, please.
Put away those smokes and set down the red bull.
Fair winds and following seas from new england. God Bless.
I honestly think they should have a show that runs longer than a few months. I’m so no a TV watcher but I could watch The Deadliest Catch 24/7!!!
My birthday is July 9th and I’m hoping that I can get my hubby to get me a T-Shirt! You crew rocks! (((Hugs))) I keep watching the blog to be updated
on Phil health. Take care and I hope to see you back in the wheel house next session.
We see that the same rough guardian angel that has visited our family has been watching over the Cornelia Marie and her crew.
When my daughter was a year old, she fell down a flight of stairs and fractured her wrist. When the hospital did a head x-ray to check for a skull fracture, they found a nickel in her esophagus. To this day we still don’t know how it got there. If she hadn’t fallen down the stairs, the nickel could have turned at any moment and she would have suffocated before we even knew what was happening.
Things like this just go to show, everything happens for a reason.
Our best wishes go out to Captain Phil for a speedy and complete recovery. The show just wouldn’t be the same without you. ^_^
PS Any time you head out to Buffalo, NY, the wings and beer are on us!
Hey!
I saw the last episode and i really hope that you are getting better Phil! I can’t wait untill next episode to see what’s happening with you… So anyway i was looking thru a couple of videos here on the site and suddenly a saw a pic of you guys and in the back ground it was swedish letters! And offcourse since i’m swedish now living in Boston for a year, i had to tell one of my friends back home that likes the show almost as much as i do… The thing is that both of us are now woundering where we can find information about where you are going to do apperances (Sp?) cause it would be awsome to meet up with our favorites sometime in the future, in scandinavia or here in the states:) Thanks again gor a great show, be safe and take care!
I wish you the best in your road to recovery. You and your sons make the show so interesting, and my husband and I really enjoy watching the show every Tuesday. You remind me of my father, and that is why I have taken such a liking to you: tough and gruff, good heart, reckless lifestyle, but focused and loyal. Take care and God bless.
God’s speed for your recovery. If you need someone to take care of you, I’m your gal!!! I’m 5′7, 129 lbs, blond-haired, blue eyed and in between jobs. Dude, you need me. I love you and your boys and feel like I know you! I’m sure this isn’t the first time you’ve heard this - but no joke. I’m serious as a heart attack. YOU ROCK!! A pic can be arranged for your viewing pleasure!!
Phil,
Good luck and Godspeed in your recovery. I’ve been a trauma and critical care nurse for 27 years and PE’s are nasty and, more often than not, with a big one they are fatal. I have just recently discovered the show and immediately took to the care and comeraderie of everyone on the Cornelia Marie. Take care.:)
Watched the episode last night and WOW!! I’m so sorry you’ve had to endure this but I’m glad that you’re getting healthier. How lucky to have two sons who so clearly love you and a crew who consider you more than their boss, but a friend. If nothing else, that should make you feel a little healthier right there. I’m sending good thoughts your way and saying all the prayers I can to get you back in that wheelhouse for red crab ‘08. Not for the show’s sake so much (though I love watching the show and it just wouldn’t be the same if you were not in the wheelhouse watching over your guys) but because you seem to be the kind of guy that would not feel whole unless he could be out on the water doing what he loves. I just adore you and I’m pulling for you all the way.
Hoping you come through this Phil! You are our absolute favorite. My husband has been fishing commercially for 34 years and has seen it all. You two are cut from the same cloth, grew up during the same time, etc. He is one tough guy. For him to say the same of you is saying alot!
My husband and I are avid fans of the show, and of your boat, especially! You look to be about our age - children of the 70’s! We are keeping you in our thoughts as you recover. I don’t know how you got through that blood clot, but I can see one thing that came out of it - there is no doubt your boys love their old man!
Phil - I am a Registered Respiratory Therapist, 19 yrs experience in the field, B.S., RRT / ACLS / PALS / NRP certified….experience from Large Trauma Centers to small rural hospitals - even spent 6 months covering a hospital in the Carribean. You are one Lucky individual….God Speed ! OH Ya….STOP SMOKING !!
Hey Phil, don’t know if you’re a religious man, but God wouldn’t have thrown you out of bed if He was through with you. He seems to be using you to pass on a message. Who knows who you might help. Keep your head up and enjoy every moment of your life. You will get through this and be back on the thrown of the Cornelia Marie soon. Miss Ya!
Just saw tonights episode, I know exactly the feeling of a PE after enduring one myself back in 04.
one feeling we never want to go through again. I just hope they didnt wake up at unreasonable hours to give you the needle in the gut!
keep strong! I’ll be a fan for a long time!
Just finished tonights episode (07/01/08). Glad to see (and hear) that you are going to be fine. Back in 2004, after an acl repair (injured in iraq ‘03) of my right knee, i also suffered a pulmonary embolism (PE) such as yourself. I had a seizure (from the PE) and my muscles in my right hip and right shoulder tightened up so much, that it broke my right hip and my right shoulder, i bit my tongue completely in two also, all while my frightened 4yr old daughter (4 at the time) witnessed it all. I had what was called a saddle emboli, eight of them, that broke loose from my lower right calf from a dvt (deep vein thrombosis), which traveled to my heart and my right lung, and i can slightly remember being in the ER with my wife and being told that I may not survive through the night, very scary stuff indeed, it’ll wake you up and make life worth living.
i have had 1 additional knee surgery, 3 hip surgeries and two shoulder surgeries since (and because) of my PE, so i understand how you feel. I won’t go into every detail and bore the hell out of you, but i want to just say ‘i understand’. i hope you continue to heal and wish you the best, and the best to your family and the rest of the crew on the CM.
god bless and you have one fan (out of many) that understands just what you went through!
Yo Phil, i just saw todays show and i just wanted to say god bless you. I just turned 55 and had a major blow, i thought i was invincible but i had an ultrasound of my heart, as i laid there watching inside my heart puming blodd i realized that invicibility is an illusion, life is fragile man, enjoy evry second!
I had the ultimate pleasure of meeting the VERY handsome Capt Phil and Josh in person this last weekend in Hillsboro, OR. Capt Phil looked healthy, sun-tanned, and had a great smile! Josh (what a doll!) was hilarious and entertained everyone until his father arrived! When asked, Josh stated that his dad had not yet been released by the doctor to return to the Cornelia Marie.
Although Capt Phil said he had not stopped smoking, he said he had “cut down”. I asked him how he was feeling and he said “Okay.” I wish him good health and happiness. The Deadliest Catch just won’t be the same unless he returns to the Cornelia Marie! I cannot even imagine watching this show without Capt Phil! As if I didn’t already have a major crush on him, after meeting him in person, I am totally and madly in love with him now! GET WELL CAPT PHIL!!!! Love Cameo
I don’t (really) want Josh to be fired. But he’s mean for being a suck up and a taddle tale. But Jake as captain…that would be soo cool.
Okay, things should go like this. The new guy, Dan, should be okay for a bit. Then, he should be really bad (Sorry Dan, nothing against you) and really slow and stupid, then when Jake ’slacks’ no one will care cuz they’ll all be killing Dan.
Dear Phil, Oh course we only seen the previews but thank God you are alive!!!!! Maybe that wave that threw you out of your bunk was an angel, You probably would have not taken this seriously,Kept on Crabbin and Your Dream would have materialized about Dying at Sea.Once that blood clot burst in your lung, you would have been a goner! Life and Family are more important than any crab. And no amount of money would have been worth your Life. Just ask your son’s and your crew. And your loyal fans out here that consider you our extended family.God gave you another chance, how ironic that the sea saved you instead of taking you!!!!!Get well and take care of yourself”GOD BE WITH YOU”,go home and get better!!!!!!!
Phil. I sure hope you are back in the wheel house soon. You are so awesome!! I love to watch ou on the Deadliest Catch and I think Josh is an especially wonderful caring son. Please take care and no more TV’s for Jake!
This is how things should go, Phil should say “Jake, Josh, come into the wheel house” then once they’re there, “Josh, you’re fired. Jake, you’re the new captain”
Of course that won’t happen, cuz Murrey’s gonna be the new captain for a bit, but it would be funny.
And just so you guys know, I do know this all happened months ago.

Phil,
You have my email address I’m sure, so drop me a line.
Chris

Your boat didn’t get it’s fair share of air time on the 7/8 show!! I was pretty disappointed! I’m also sick of looking at that mean captain Keith on the Wizard!! That guy needs medication! Hurry up and get back to work, if you get cut and start bleeding just put some electrical tape on it!! Just kidding, but not really!!! You are truly missed!! Hugs from Michigan!

July 9th, 2008 at 6:16 am
Captain Phil and Crew….take care of yourselves guys. You have so many fans who watch you on a daily basis. Your job is so dangerous yet so many of us tune in to watch you put your lives in danger. Your bravery is admirable and I guess we live vicariously through you all. Many of us could NEVER do that type of job…God Bless you all and keep you safe.
Captain Phil….take care of yourself…you’re very important to a lot of us!!!!
July 8th, 2008 at 7:35 am
Get well soon Capt. Phil. You’re the best! To bring you good luck I have you on my screensaver, I’m wearing my new Cornelia Marie tee that I bought off your website and I’m voting for you at least 10 times a day as favorite crew. I notice you just took a little jump up to 6.7, guess I’ll have to get back to voting more! LOL PLEASE hurry up and get back to your old self. I hope you come to Michigan sometime, I’d really like to meet you guys and get some pictures to hang in my store! Take care!!
July 7th, 2008 at 10:16 pm
Phil, I know you will probly never read this yourself, but you should know, people really care……Take care of yourself…..Josh keep a eye on him.
July 7th, 2008 at 9:25 am
Phil..Jake..Josh.. you guys are my idols. I am waiting to see a time where you all visit Illinois, especcially Jake. I am probably the only girl who is 16 that enjoys the show as much as I do. Seriously, you all light up my day, everyday. Phil, take care of yourself!! I cried when you went in to the hospital. Have you ever tried chew. I heard it’s easier on you but has bad effects just the same.
July 5th, 2008 at 9:26 am

You crew rocks! (((Hugs))) I keep watching the blog to be updated
My birthday is July 9th and I’m hoping that I can get my hubby to get me a T-Shirt!
on Phil health.

July 2nd, 2008 at 4:24 pm
PHIL,
God’s speed for your recovery.
Take good care,
Love, Julie

Phil,
Good luck and Godspeed in your recovery. I’ve been a trauma and critical care nurse for 27 years and PE’s are nasty and, more often than not, with a big one they are fatal. I have just recently discovered the show and immediately took to the care and comeraderie of everyone on the Cornelia Marie. Take care.:)

Hey Skipper,
Watched the episode last night and WOW!!
Get Better Soon!
~Sarah

Hoping you come through this Phil! You are our absolute favorite. My husband has been fishing commercially for 34 years and has seen it all. You two are cut from the same cloth, grew up during the same time, etc. He is one tough guy. For him to say the same of you is saying alot!
July 2nd, 2008 at 10:20 am
Phil,
My husband and I are avid fans of the show, and of your boat, especially! You look to be about our age - children of the 70’s! We are keeping you in our thoughts as you recover. I don’t know how you got through that blood clot, but I can see one thing that came out of it - there is no doubt your boys love their old man!
What a life!

Miss Ya!

Hey Phil,
Just saw tonights episode, I know exactly the feeling of a PE after enduring one myself back in 04.
one feeling we never want to go through again. I just hope they didnt wake up at unreasonable hours to give you the needle in the gut!
keep strong! I’ll be a fan for a long time!
July 1st, 2008 at 7:29 pm
Phil,
Just finished tonights episode (07/01/08).

I am worried about your health. Mywife and I have been watching the show since the first season. You are our favorite. Stay healthy.

Love Cameo
July 1st, 2008 at 3:52 pm
Hannah,
I don’t (really) want Josh to be fired.

July 1st, 2008 at 2:38 pm
Phil. I sure hope you are back in the wheel house soon. You are so awesome!! I love to watch ou on the Deadliest Catch and I think Josh is an especially wonderful caring son. Please take care and no more TV’s for Jake!
July 1st, 2008 at 1:56 pm
Alicia Pepper,
OMG!! I cant stop laughing ur soooo freakin funny. I dont think Josh should be fired, but jake should be the capt.!!!!!
July 1st, 2008 at 8:54 am
Really? I can’t wait. Today’s gonna go so…slow…
