Video Interview of Captain Phil, “I damn near died on the boat”
It appears the word is out… Captain Phil faced a fatal situation this season, but we don’t know when or what episode it will show up on. In fact, he’s still not fully recovered as of today. But, let Captain Phil tell you in his own words what really happened… after the jump is a video from a WGN TV9 interview he did in Chicago with Keith Colburn.
Here is the summary by Discovery Channel of Tuesday new episode:
Deadliest Catch
A Numbers Game
TV-14 (L)A mechanical breakdown presses Northwestern’s Edgar to make a dangerous repair. Meanwhile questionable counting makes Sig lose his temper. Hard work separates the greenhorns on Wizard. On Cornelia Marie, Phil’s health is failing and impacts the crew.

Just want to let you know that my son and I love watching you and your crew on Deadliest Catch, as well as all the crews of the ships in the show…. When we seen the episode where your had difficulties my son turned to me and said I hope he will be alright and asked if we could ask Zeus and Posiedian to watch over you and the rest of the crew of the Cornelious Marie. Apparently They did and we are grateful for it. I hope we see you out on the Seas again knocking the piss out of those tasty crabs.
Thank You and the Discovery channel for the opportunity to experiance the thrill you and your family get to experiance on a yearly bases.

Like the best seasoning within a great meal… you are so needed by your sons, the show, the world and me. I loved watching awesomeness!!! You are Awesome and an exemplary Dad!!! Kudos! And a heck of a handsome man…I like… Love,

Phil - You are not only the BEST captain out there, but you are a great DAD! Your sons love and respect you. When you can do the job you do and still
have their loyality and love, you have done what a lot of men can’t seem to do staying at home. Get well and get back out there with your family.
May God bless.

Hope your health improves you are so “Hot” and I would love to met you……….
July 5th, 2008 at 11:36 pm
okay I have been reading quite a few responses. I must say, he doesnt need your advice on personal health issues. He is probably pissed that he already signed away the intellectual property rights associated with that footage to the Discovery Channel because now we all know about his personal situations and not only that, we all feel obligated to somehow comment. Leave the poor man alone.
July 5th, 2008 at 6:42 pm
Capt. Phil, My thoughts and prayers are with you and your crew as well as the many others who are out there doing such a job. I know many viewers/fans share my thoughts in saying that I hope you recover swiftly and you will soon be back to the Cornelia Maire soon. Godspeed.
July 5th, 2008 at 4:09 pm
Phil,
I just want to wish you all the best in your return to health. I pray for you every night and hope that you will return to being healthy and captain of the Cornelia Marie within no time. I will pray for Josh and Jake as well, as I know that they are the lights of your life…
Good Luck,

June 27th, 2008 at 7:07 pm
So hey Phil! Yeah I had to do a web search to see what the hell was going on after watching you nearly kick the bucket. I just wanted to say that my family and I are keeping you in thought. After watching that episode, I swear I could not sleep. In some ways you remind me a lot of my own dad, who just like you is a stubborn old man… but I am sooooo relieved to hear that you health is improving. Hang in there and here’s to the future!!

LOL LOL You sure are a dumbass, like a guy above wrote……….but then again, aren’t a lot of us when it comes to “letting go” and “letting God” and admitting we need help. WE ALL CARE ABOUT YOU but none more than Jake & Josh, and your crew! I know you credit Todd (your cameraman) with saving your life……….so THANK YOU TODD also! Opies, Kings, it’s all GOOD! Love the show and LOVE YOU! VROOM VROOM you go man! Barbs

PHIL,
ALSO I JUST THOUGHT THAT I WOULD GIVE YOU A WAY TO MAIL ME IF YOU SO CHOOSE TO. I SUPPOSE THAT THE PUBLIC ALSO NOW HAS A WAY OF THIS BUT HERE YOU GO: thelonelytrucker@yahoo.com
June 26th, 2008 at 12:29 am
I WATCHED THE SHOW WHEN YOU WERE INJURED BY A WAVE. I THOUGHT TO MYSELF THAT I AM KIND OF LIKE YOU AS FAR AS WORRYING ABOUT THE OTHER CREW MEMBERS AND THEIR FAMILIES. I CANT HELP BUT ASK, YOU MUST HAVE REALLY HAD A DIFFERENT THOUGHT GOING THROUGH YOUR MIND WHEN YOU WERE INJURED. ALL OF THE STATEMENTS YOU MADE TO THE CAMERA PERSONNEL AND YOUR CREW WERE REALLY NOT THE ENTIRE TRUTH. YOU KNEW WITHOUT A DOUBT THAT YOU NEEDED HELP. YOU STATED THAT YOU NEEDED IT. WHY DID YOU CHOOSE TO FLAGRANTLY AVOID GETTING THE HELP THAT YOU DID WANT AND WHY DID YOU WAIT IT OUT. YOU SHOULD HAVE INSTANTLY CALLED THE COAST GUARD AND THEY WOULD HAVE RESCUED YOU AT SOME POINT. EVEN WHEN YOU WERE MAKING CIRCLES AROUND WAITING TO DOCK, THEY PROBABLY COULD HAVE GOT YOU THEN RIGHT. I CAN ONLY ASSUME THAT YOU WANTED TO CHEAT DEATH AND LOOK IT IN ITS FACE. SERIOUSLY, YOU SEEM VERY INTELLIGENT. YOU KNEW THAT YOUR CREW, THE CAMERA PERSONNEL AND THE OTHER BOATS IN THE FLEET WANTED YOU TO GET HELP. YOU INTENTIONALLY IGNORED THEIR CALLS TO YOUR BOAT. I HAVE BEEN JUST AS IGNORANT AS YOU BEFORE, AND I TO HAVE MY REASONS. I ALSO KNOW THAT THIS WAS LAST SEASON, AND ITS JUST HITTING THE AIR NOW. SO TRY TO REMEMBER WHAT WENT THROUGH YOUR HEAD DURING THAT 60 HOUR TIME FROM YOUR INJURY TO ARRIVING AT THE HOSPITAL. WHY DID YOU NOT LET YOUR 2ND HAND PERSON TAKE CONTROL OF THE SHIP IMMEDIATELY WHEN YOU FIRST GOT INJURED. WHY DID HE NOT STEP UP TO THE PLATE AND TELL YOU TO GET THE HELL OUT OF THE CONTROL ROOM WHY DID THIS GO DOWN THIS WAY. IF IT HAPPENED AGAIN WOULD YOU DO THE SAME THING. THINK ABOUT THIS AND THE CONSEQUENCES YOUR ACTIONS COULD HAVE AND MAY HAVE IN THE FUTURE ON YOU, YOUR CREW, AND UNFORTUNATELY THE PEOPLE THAT VIEW THE SHOW. YOU SEE YOU ALSO NEED TO THINK ABOUT KIDS OR OTHER PEOPLE THAT ARE NOT REALLY EDUCATED WATCHING THE SHOW. YOUR ACTIONS MAY TELL THEM ” HEY IF IM HURT OR SOMETHING IS WRONG WITH ME MEDICALLY I’LL BE OK WITHOUT HELP” IMAGINE EXACTLY WHAT TYPE OF MESSAGE THAT PASSES ON TO PEOPLE. LISTEN, IM NOT AT ALL ANGRY WITH YOU, YOU ARE A HUMAN, WE ALL MAKE MISTAKES SOME BIGGER THEN OTHERS. BUT YOU NEED TO ASK YOURSELF THESE QUESTIONS. I WAS ONCE VERY MUCH LIKE YOU. NOW I HAVE CHANGED AND I AM MUCH STRONGER AND I THINK ABOUT MY ACTIONS BEFORE A FINAL DECISION IS MADE. YOU CAN FIND ME ON THE COVER STORY OF “TRUCKERS NEWS” JANUARY 2008 MY NAME IS HEATH HUDLOW

Capt. Phil, We love The Deadliest Catch and we love you. Tough guys hurt and get sick just like anybody else. They take a lot for granted think they are somewhat indispensable. We watch you and your crew along with all the other Captains and their crew family. That is exactly what we feel you are to us is our family. If your sick we hurt for you. Your TV fans, your son’s and crew care about you and your health. What a blessing to have a family and to be able to work with your father and a father to be able to work with his son’s is such a blessing. I love my father and miss him terribly. I lost him whne I was 14 so for you three to have each other and this time together, for goodness sake take care of one aother no matter what .
Sometimes we have to make changes in order to be where we are suppose to be in life. If you are sick and have a chance to better your health, do it. Some don’t have that chance and we had rather know you are healthy and watching those fine Son’s grow up and sharing old age with them than to have them go through life without a father they love and need. They have a lot to learn from you so take care of your health so you can teach them as much as you can so they can teach their children and grandchildren and we can all grow old together and enjoy many laughs & tears for many years to come! Thank you all for what you do and what you all bring into our homes. Watching you has made me and my family appreciate what you do more than we could ever imagine. A Prayer line to Heaven to fill your body with healthy living and many years more years of fishing!!
June 25th, 2008 at 8:17 pm
I respect all you do as a captain of a fishing vessel on the Bering Sea. I wish you all the best as you recover and huury back to “The Deadliest Catch” soon.
June 25th, 2008 at 8:16 pm
Phil - Hey, my family just saw the episode and thought, my GOD, will he be ok? Jesus, it was compelling… which means for those of us way out here in Michigan, even we are riveted by the series and appreciate your dedication and love for your work and family. We just wish you wouldn’t smoke so much… that can’t help your health, and good luck with that.
Thanks for catching the crab we eat… it’s yummy.
Regardless, best wishes, get better soon and God speed!
If you ever want a Big Ten college team to root for, choose the MICHIGAN STATE SPARTANS! And, while you’re at it, try Bell’s Beer from Michigan…
Good luck, Phil!

Dear Captain Phil;
I highly respect the work you and your fellow captains and crews do. Thank you for the hard work and all the hours you put in. In regards to your health, Please take care of yourself, the show would never be the same without you. I pray that the sea is good to you and your crew and that you always return to harbor safely. My husband and I will always reman avid fans. Once again THANK YOU FOR WHAT YOU DO AND GOD BLESS!!!!

Capt Harris,
I am so thankful your ok. Like many other’s, I was compelled to find out if your alive and well. I did a hitch out of dutch and still tell the horror story of landing in dutch on that gravel runway years ago. My point is stick around and be able to share those stories with your grandchildren. God speed brother!
June 25th, 2008 at 9:57 am
Phil,
I watched last night’s episode on the edge of my chair. I thought you had maybe punctured your lung (I’m a med tech) and kept yelling at you to let the Coast Guard pick you up (like you heard me). But a pulmonary embolism is bad enough. Next time, the hell with the crab, take care of yourself, you may not be that lucky and your boys love ya. So do we. My thoughts and prayers are with you on the sea. Take good care.
June 25th, 2008 at 5:41 am
Phil,
Glad to hear your doing ok. I see alot of my father in you, so I know you’re a good man. Take care of yourself. Your family needs you.
June 25th, 2008 at 4:53 am
Hey Phil, like many others I had to look you up after the show to see if you were going to be ok! I love the show and watching you guys do take better care of yourself watch your blood preasure and Jake and Josh behave and take care of your dad.
June 25th, 2008 at 12:02 am
hi Phil and family,
Glad to hear you are doing ok, after watching tonights episode, i had to google you and make sure everything turned out ok brother!! sounds like a very scary thing to have gone thru. glad to hear your ok.
have watched the show for a good long time now, im a raised alaskan, who moved to seattle as soon as i was old enough to leave, and now find myself back n forth quite a bit, currently in alaska, but call the ballard/magnolia area of seattle home for my heart, and have spent many years in that neighborhood so the boats were allways part of the daily scenery for me, long before the show. ive allways identified with your boat and family probably the most of all the crews, so i have to say, i was genuinly concerned for you after the show tonight. take care man, be well, best of luck to ya and yours!
June 24th, 2008 at 9:02 pm
Hi Phil!
Me and my family are huge fans of Deadliest Catch and have been watching from the start. I was worried when I saw last week’s episode and then this week’s didn’t tell us the outcome of your health scare. I had to use google to find an article that explained what happened. My 9 and 12 year old girls came running down when the show was on to ask what had happened to you! They were very dissapointed that we were left “hanging” by the show!
Phil, please take care of yourself and take it easy. It is clear to everyone (well everyone with a brain)that watches the show that all of you work so hard and don’t take time for taking care of yourselves. Your sons still need you and it’s important to be there for them. God bless and take care!
June 18th, 2008 at 7:45 am
I am a huge Deadliest Catch fan and have been hearing the rumors about your horrific experience. I hope you are continuing to recover. I’m a nurse and do alot of teaching(and preaching!). Lucky for you I’m exhausted and can’t think clearly right now!(they don’t call it graveyard shift for nothin’!!) I do hope you realize how serious your condition is, though. Follow Dr’s advice and let those sweet boys take care you!! They are truly good boys and are lucky to have you. Good fathers are a dying breed. Thank you for restoring my faith in fathers. I hope to see you rested, healthy and “fit as a fiddle” soon!! You are the best!! Keep bustin’ em! Best Wishes and Much Love from Tennessee!
June 17th, 2008 at 10:10 pm

June 7th, 2008 at 5:50 am
Phil, It was really a great experience for my husband & I when we met you and your friend last Sunday night in Gloucester, MA at our fundraiser. We had already met Sig and knew you were coming, but it was getting late and we thought you weren’t coming afterall, then, as we were getting ready to back out of our parking space we saw you pull up in the truck. My husband didn’t think it was you, as you’ve lost a lot of weight. I convinced him IT WAS YOU, and he put the car back into the space and we got out of the car and saw you walking toward the Gloucester House Restaurant. I was the one running after you as you got out of the pickup truck, yelling “CAPT PHIL, CAPT PHIL, chasing you down to get a photograph and have a momemt for my husband and I to talk to you and your friend before the mobs realized you were there. We’re so glad you’re feeling better. Take care and God Bless!
Deadliest Catch is our favorite program, and you, Sig and Johnathan are our favorites! So glad you were in our little Cape Ann Island town! Keep Safe!

Hey, Capt’n Phil:
Wow! I already sent a gabby note to you expressing concern about your health. Being a mother with children I tend to sound like one. I’m impressed with the large number of people who are reaching out to you expressing their support and love in so many ways. What a wonderful thing to know all of this can happen from your TV show. I’m not one to usually be a “fan”, but I’ve enjoyed all of you. I live in Bellevue,WA and due to a head injury no longer drive and spend much more time watching TV than I ever dreamed I would. You know, living in Seattle, what the weather is like across the lake. My parents both died from smokes, alcohol, and poor health. I can remember trying to talk to my dad and he didn’t listen to me - So I know well that “preaching” doesn’t help. .. people and your kids are telling you how much of a loss it would be for you to not be well. I greatly appreciate the show and all of you do feel like a “family.” Just like a baseball team. Dad’s are important people - even more so, I think in some ways than moms. At any rate, just want to express my appreciation for what you do, for sharing your occupation and life to the world. You can see how much you are “adopted” into hearts and families. I greatly look forward to the shows. One of these days I’m going over to Seattle so I can see the boats. Good Health, Joy, and all good things. With friendly affection.
June 4th, 2008 at 10:51 am
Hi Phil,
I love watching you and your crew, you’re my favorite. I really hope you are feeling better so we can continue to watch you on Deadliest Catch. I can’t miss one episode, I am totally addicted. I think its awesome what you do for a living and I hope Jake and Josh continue in your footsteps. You guys are great. You will be in my prayers as always.
Jackie
June 4th, 2008 at 10:25 am
I can remember the anticipation for deadliest catch to begin and i didnt think that i would enjoy it as much as i do. Honestly this show wouldnt be as good if you captain Phil werent part of it. I am not a religious watcher, but if i get a chance to catch the show i enjoy seeing the CM pulling in massive pots of crab it definentally lifts my spirits to know that you will be getting off the boat with a little more than pocket change.
NOW ON TO PHILS HEALTH…
A few years back my father passed away due to a traveling blood clot except it wasnt just one clot it was several. the blood clots made their way to his heart so quickly that his heart exploded in his chest. I just wanted you to know that it could have been much worse not saying that it wasnt HUGE but you are very lucky that god didnt want to take you just yet.
Your boys are lucky to have a father like yourself and i am sure they know that.
Have a wonderful day and be safe.
June 4th, 2008 at 8:12 am
Phil,
Happy to hear you’re improving daily. I had a blood clot in my leg a few years ago and my Dr was very adament about me NOT moving more than necessary. He kept telling me how easy those things can let loose and then it’s basically “in God’s hands” as he put it. I know how much pain I was in when I initially realized something was wrong and I can’t imagine what you must have been feeling and thinking at the time.
Well, hang in there, and as much as it sucks sometimes….listen to your doctor!!!!
June 3rd, 2008 at 9:50 pm
Cpt Phil,
Watched tonight’s episode hoping to see how you were doing, and darn it they didn’t show it yet. Rushed online to check, and found your webiste. I am very, very glad you are doing well. You and your boys are my favorites on the show. I’m sorry for what you have/are going through. I am an ER nurse, and have seen first hand what fractured ribs and a collasped lung can do. Even worse, I have seen what a Pulmonary Embolism can do (I have heard you calling it an anuerysm, but if you had clots in your legs, then I believe you have a pulmonary embolism). I know it’s a long recovery, but from what I have seen from you, I know you will make it. I am always on your side, hoping to see the pots be realed in with tons of crab. Can’t wait to see more from you and your family.
Angie
June 3rd, 2008 at 9:24 am
Phil, please please please get yourself healthy, man. I know I speak for my whole family and probably every fan of the show when I say we are all concerned for your health and safety. I watch the show religiously, and you and the crew of the Cornelia Marie are the main reason I watch. Someone above mentioned Chantix…great stuff. I have been nicotine-free for almost a year, and I’ve never felt better. And stop drinking so much damn Red Bull!!! Your a salty sea-dog, tough-as-nails, give-’em-hell kinda guy, and no one wants to see you go. Take care of yourself, Captain!
June 2nd, 2008 at 10:27 pm
Phil,
I hope you feel better soon. I just started watching Deadliest Catch, and you’re one of my favorites.
June 2nd, 2008 at 1:12 am
Hi Phil,
You gave us quite a scare there. No lectures here, do whatever makes you happy. Who cares that the boy used a credit card, he and the rest of the crew risk their lives everday to do a job that very few are not only willing to do, but are able to do. I have the upmost respect for you and all of the other fishermen that do what you do. I’ve seen every episode made and just love it. Wishing you a speedy recovery and hope to see you at the helm soon. You are one of the best salty dawgs out there! I pray for safe returns for all of you. A heartfelt thank you for making such a terrific program.
June 1st, 2008 at 7:52 am
Phil,
Damn, don’t scare we like that again, I nearly cried when I heard early rumors! Take care of yourself.. If you are still smoking and want to quit, try Chantix, PLEASE! I am in no way associated with Chantix.. just a customer who has been smoke free for over 3 months. I never thought I would be able to quit(after trying other methods many times) I wish you and yours the best!! Just take it easy, enjoy the family, and if necessary…become a walmart greeter(fewer hours and less stress).. just kidding, well… maybe not. I want to see you happy and healthy!!!
May 29th, 2008 at 4:39 pm
i was watching the ‘new’ show & saw the preview for tuesday’s show & i was like “WHAT!” but you do look good in the video & hope you start taking care of yourself better, stop drinking red bull!!!! lol…but i hope you all stay healthy & strong….TAKE CARE OF YOURSELF MAN! YOUR FANS LOVE YOU! much love & god bless!
May 29th, 2008 at 12:51 pm
Listen man, you need to quit smoking and drinking all those energy drinks and coffee, trust me your gonna end up with a massive heart attack or stroke, just dont be so dam selfish, think about your kids and family, what u do affects everyone around you, your family friends etc, dont be a selfish jackass, take care of your health or your gonna die you idiot…..i’m sure your kids concur, you only live one life that we know of so dont ruin your life and your families. love the show but if you kick it, it wont be the same, that busted rib should be a wake up call, those clots will kill you as well, God’s trying to tell u something, LISTEN UP and keep up the good work
May 28th, 2008 at 8:03 pm
Captain Phil, I LOVE the show, and The Cornelia Marie is my favorite. I am wishing you a speedy recovery. You are just a very sweet man under all that gruff exterior. If you weren’t, you would have shot those boys of yours for running up bills on your credit card! But I think it was very touching to see your son taking such good care of you on the show. Get better, and get back on out there. The show would just not be the same without you. Be well, and stay safe. God bless

May 28th, 2008 at 10:22 am
Phil,
We missed the show last night and I have been bombarded by my family on what happened
(at least you got your quota of King Crab) , Edgar’s hit in the head on the Northwestern and
then they tell me you can’t breath on next weeks episode!!!
Good grief!!
I hit the internet to find your site and see if you are okay!
You and the boy’s have become part of our family.
My son hopes you cut back on the Red Bull, he says that really wires you permanently, don’t worry about the cigs,
I know they help you to stay awake and really I think you would rather die doing the thing you love than sitting around
the bars swapping sea stories!!
Take care old friend!!
May 28th, 2008 at 8:17 am
Phil,
We wish you all the best, and you are the best!! Hope to see you on the Cornelia Marie for many more seasons!! To all members of the crew we wish you all the best.
May 27th, 2008 at 10:36 pm
Capt. Phil,
I had no idea you almost died! That’s terrible! But I hope you’re on the way to recovery and don’t suffer any setbacks…that kind of stuff can take a long time to get over. You’re my favorite captain on DC (by far, I might add) and I love watching the show. I really have alot of admiration for you and all the other men out there. Take care of yourself and keep on keepin’ on.
With love,
Katie
May 27th, 2008 at 10:07 pm
Captaion Phil !!! You’re the greatest !!! Our family loves watching you !!! You are great with your crew !!!! But, must say…the day you retire…if you do…You Will Be Very Missed !!! If you ever desire warm weather find us in AZ. My husband is from Alaska and worked with the oil 27 years, Dead Horse. I have yet to go to Alaska but, will be soon. Halibut fishing and hunting, No Crabs !!! lol… It is so great that they have this show on Discovery, it shows just how hard and risky you guys all have to work.
May 26th, 2008 at 8:30 pm
Cornelia Marie,
My husband and I watch the show with our 3 boys and they’re always mesmerized. Ben works on a rig and I can’t count how many times I’ve gotten the calls about his injuries. Phil, I’m so glad you’re doing better and that your boys are so attentive. We love the show, we love living vicariously through you all….but we also want each one of you to go home safely. You guys are addicted to fishing and we’re addicted to you!!
Much love from Lafayette, LA:

We have yet to see the injury ep yet, but damn it, Phil, you’ve got to take better care of yourself! You want to see grandkids, eh? Maybe cut back a bit on the Red Bulls. I don’t think you’ll lose your manly man status if you do. In fact, so many of your fans are worried about your health. I’m sure the other captains won’t rag on you if you cut back a bit. You’re still a young man with lots more to see and do in this life.
Maybe I’m just one wee voice and you won’t pay me no never mind. Still.

Geesh Phil…all I hear about is how you dang near kilt yourself last season. It’s great that your fans are so concerned about you…you really have won a lot of hearts out there. I think a lot of it has to do with the fact that while whole families work their boats you tough it almost alone and there is soo much you are responsible for - it’s pretty phenomenal all the regulations, AFG, Coasties and everything on the Cornelia Marie and all the people who depend on you - you do need to make sure you take care of yourself. I’m sure you have plenty of fine lady’s who would do so for you should you be so inclined
Well that’s my advice take care of business but take care of yourself first…yeah I’m a rocket scientist

Phil, hope things are looking up for you and the gang of the greatest fishing boat on the Bering Sea-be careful-and watch those waves-that was really great to see how your kids take care of their dad-keep up the good work-Rosemary from Montana

Dear Phil,
I hope you get better, I have not seen you lately on the show, I just started watching this show, I think it is great and you are my favorite. I see that you have some health issues, you have to get better. I wish I could apply for the job, I would do it. I am a female and I have done alot, seen it all and etc. I would have to be twenty years younger to do it, but what can you do. Also I would of love to me you, you live so far and I am from New Jersey. I will be praying for you so get well and come back. We all miss you!
May 21st, 2008 at 9:31 pm
Hey Phil,
Glad you made it through the crisis. Your body is talkin to you…listen…it’s saying eat a veggie once in awhile, cut WAY BACK on the cigs, and red bull . You have a great crew, you may need to let them in the wheelhouse once in a while so you can get more rest. It’s really touching to see Josh trying to take care of you. You raised good boys. You’re loved, make good decisions and get healthy. My family loves the show and we’re glad so many other people do too. You and all the CM crew really keep things interesting. Worry Less…Pray more. God bless you and yours. Deb from Tallahassee, Florida

Phil, please - please….feel better. After the show tonight (May 20) I was worried about you. I know you had a cold - but now I hear about this lung problem. NOT GOOD. You are such a good dad, and captain. You need to be around for a long time to come. I wish you could take some time off and releive some of the stress! My daughter and I love watching the show…but get we get very angry if the Cornelia Marie is not featured that much in an episode. We love all you guys and hope for the best for all of you. Our prayers are with you Phil. Get well and stay well. Love, K

May 15th, 2008 at 1:58 pm
Hey Phil -
I’m glad you are doing better - please cut down on the cigs and the red bull - those boys don’t want to take over the boat just yet from you!
Clots are nothing to mess with - I had a massive stroke almost three years ago from a clot and can’t imagine you not being able to be out on the sea like I’m not out in the world so much anymore.
I love watching you guys and pull for you every week - it was a GREAT Mother’s day to have the DC marathon running all day - didn’t get to go anywhere because it was cold and rainy but watching you guys and enjoying the humor along with the action (and pizza!) was really fun.
Love the blue of the Cornelia Marie! Need a picture of the lady she’s named after on here!
Take care y’all - wishing you a very profitable and safe season-
Mel
May 15th, 2008 at 12:54 pm

Hey Capt. Phil, I love watching Deadliest Catch and you are definitely one of my fav captains. Please slow down on the cigs I would hate to see what happened to my stepdad happen to you he died from two heart attacks because of them also the Cornelia Marie wouldn’t be the same without you. Take care and prayers for you and the crew for a good catch and quick return.

I pray that you and the crew, and all the captians and crews, return home to your families each trip. Take care of your self. Remember that there are many, many people praying for you. Sometimes the power of prayer is amazing. Thank you for sharing these trips with the world. God bless. Lisa
April 30th, 2008 at 7:58 pm
Phil:
Wow, the Good Lord was sure watching over you and the crew. People don’t usually get to talk about those sort of heart problems. I believe that is what killed John Ritter. We are sure big fans of your’s and hope you are well and fully recovered soon. May you always have a star to steer your vessel by!
April 30th, 2008 at 7:49 pm
Dear Capt Phil,
I was relieved to hear that you are doing much better. I, like the rest of your fans have watched you from the beginning of Deadliest Catch and never miss a show. We are similar in the fact that we “take care” of the people in our lives. That is very hard to change, because it is part of what makes you the wonderful person you seem to be.
If you are ever around Pittsburg, let me know. This is one southern belle nurse from MS living in PA that would love to meet you!!
Best to you and your boys, and the great crew you have to keep viewers like me entertained! I love you all!
Always,
kris
April 30th, 2008 at 5:41 pm
phil, i have an undeniable attraction towards you. i only know you from what i see on tv and by web sites, but there is something about you that draws me in. maybe its that you are so dedicated to what you love, maybe its that you bring to life what so many of us dream we could do with courage we could only pray for, maybe its the unconditional love your have for your children that we get to see first hand, maybe its because i think your really hot. What ever it is that makes me feel bonded to you, it broke when i read about what happend. i was terrified for you, your sons and everyone that loves you,{including me}. it would be more than a devistation if something were to happen to you. i am so glad you are doing better, and i know we will probably never meet, but i want you to know that i hold you in my heart. best wishes and good luck in all that you do.
April 30th, 2008 at 11:47 am
Oh Phil, I’m so thankful you’re alright. Make sure you take your blood pressure meds right and take it easy. You’re still needed by your family and all of us that gather around our TV’s on Tuesday nights to check in on your lives. All of you have brought so much more to people’s lives than you could ever possibly know. Families get together to watch ” Deadliest Catch” just like they did the Tonight Show years ago. Jake & Josh~ take care of the ol’ Man He’s a great guy. Maybe have him keep a smoking log. Have him write down every cig he smokes and a note on why he felt he needed that cig…. It might slow him down a bit. Stay safe all of you! Much love from Kansas
April 30th, 2008 at 12:56 am
Get well and take it easy Phil. You are a down to earth guy(least from what I gather and I am a good judge of character)and I always have much love and respect for all the guys out there at sea. I love the show and have become one of the biggest fans. My ex-father in law had the same condition and I know I dont have to tell you just how lucky you are to be here. I am so glad that you seem to be recovering nicely. Being an ex-oxycontin addict I know how hard it is to beat addiction, but ya really need to try to give up the cigarettes my man. I watched both my mother and father die from emphysema..they were life-long smokers. Well, enough preaching..just take it easy and make those spoiled boys of yours take care of you..LOL. Peace.

You are my favorite pirate! So glad to hear you are better! Best wishes for continued good health to you and your family. Please take care of yourself…

It saddens my heart that Phill was stricken by this unfortunate of the Pulmonary anurism, being a nurse I can understand the emergency status of the situation at the time that it happened. Someone (possibly GOD) was looking out for you to make it home the same way Jesus who was a fisher of men made it home through unbelieveable circumstances. You have once again proven fishermen are aspecial breed not to be compared to any other. Each has his good and bad points all to be taken with a grain of salt, no punn intended. We love you all for what you tirelessly do to provide food for the tables of many.
Hang in there the time of your lives is still ahead. You and only you will have the opportunity to share with the sea her greatest gifts, its openess, its gifts of food and prosperity, and to be humbled by her ability to take us at her bidding.
Love,
Ev

Phil,
Life…..It is what it is!!! My wife and I watch the show, ALL THE TIME!!! She likes Sig……. Shes a BLONDE too!?!?!?
But you are the best crabber out there!!! I was a Navy S.E.A.L. I know what its like to be up for days at a time!!!!
Phil, get off the RED BULL!!! The smokes are bad enough…. But the R.B.s will Kill you!! Try something more natural.
I’ve taken a liking for Sobe Energy Drinks…..give it a try. But enough B.S. Take the time to get better, for you,
and your family. The show wouldn’t be the same without you!!! You are the personality that makes the show tick!
My thoughts and prayers are with you… From one sailor to another…. Don’t ever ring that Bell!!!!
Hope to meet for drinks sometime…

Dear Phil,
I’ve been watching Deadliest Catch ever since it started, haven’t missed an episode ever and never will. I mainly only watch the show for you and you crew because you guys are the best out there and if something were to happen to you what would your boys do man. I know you guys are tough and all but you my friend need to take it easy and trust me once you stop smoking and all your life will be a hell of a lot better. I wish you good luck and a fast recovery Phil, I love ya to death.
An undying fan,
Stephanie

Dear Capt. Phil, I’ve watched “Deadliest Catch” for two years and have learned to respect the incredible work you and the others are doing. I’m very sorry to learn about your aneurysm and hope that you’ll be feeling better with treatment. You will not miss the cigarettes when you think of how much your family and friends would miss YOU. If you can conquer the Bering Sea, you CAN conquer smoking. I’m keeping a prayer for you and the Cornelia Marie. You and Sig are the best captains in the cold waters. God bless your recovery.
April 29th, 2008 at 11:40 am
Phil,
Even tough SOB’s like you have to take it easy once in while. I’m glad your doing better and look forward to seeing you next season.

Phil,
Geeze louise, you are one lucky SOB to have a pulmonary aneurysm blow without medical attention and still be alive! Damn!
I hope you were at least able to, once you were safely in hospital, use it to guilt Jake a bit for using your credit card.
April 29th, 2008 at 1:00 am
Phil, Hey buddy hope your feeling better. I think you may have sleep apnea. Go be checked at the local sleep center it helps man.

April 28th, 2008 at 7:35 am

I hope you are feeling better. Your family, friends, and fans want you to take care of yourself so we can keep you with us for many years to come. Take it easy on the Red Bulls and smoking. We all love you.

captain phil. i would love to meet you. i’m in wenatchee washington from july to oct. for fire season. meeting you would make my life complete. you are the hot one and i cheer for you EVERY SEASON!!!!! if i ever got to know you, i bet i could lower your bloodpressure!!!!! there are ways you know. anyway, you are the best. i hope you kick ass this season. hope to meet you soon. love from kentucky.
April 27th, 2008 at 4:05 pm
Hope you are feeling better. I’m not going to preach to you I think you’ve had enough. I’m a smoker and a diabetic with high blood pressure-so I know how changing your lifestyle is. You are going to do what you are going to do and no one but you is going to change that. I lost my mom and dad at 15 and amazingly I’m still alive. I haven’t changed all that much I just slowed it down a little. Your health is #1 and don’t ever forget it. Your kids may drive you nuts but they make life worth living. I was glad to have met you last summer and would really love to see you again. Take care of yourself-because no one is going to do it for you..
April 27th, 2008 at 6:20 am
Capt Phil.
I sure hope that your up and around and feeling much better soon. You have those two spending boys to deal with. I do wish you the best. Stay safe.
April 26th, 2008 at 1:12 pm
Capt. Phil, I wish you a very speedy recovery! Yours is my favorite crew to watch on Deadliest Catch, you guys are awesome. Take care, be well, Captain!
April 26th, 2008 at 9:40 am
Capt. Phil,
I hope you are doing well. I love the show and the Cornelia Marie is my favorite boat to watch. I know first hand how bad aneurysm can be. A couple of years ago my grandmother had one that went in her brain and she almost died. It took her a good six months to recover from it. I can’t imagine how hard it was to suffer one while out at sea. I hope you and your family are doing well!
Stay safe and take care!

April 26th, 2008 at 9:05 am
Dear Phil, I just learned that you haven’t been well, hope that you get better real soon. I love watching the pranks between you and the Northwestern. I get great giggles for those.
Being a lover of seafood, watching you do your thing in Alaska, gives me a greater respect of all “fishermen” around the world.
Hope that you feel better and keep on smiling.
Rose
April 26th, 2008 at 5:16 am
Hey Phil!
Hope you’re getting better, and QUICKLY! I love your personality! You always make us smile! Get well SOON! Hi to the Cornelia Marie crew too! You guys really bust your a$$e$ out there. I can’t imagine working in weather like that… Living in Iowa for about 25 years, I’m no stranger to the 20 below zero crap, but being wet too?? I wonder how you do it! You guys have an AWESOME captain! What a privilege to work for a man like Phil. I’m jealous! Take good care of each other.
Lots of love,
Ash
April 25th, 2008 at 3:25 pm
I really like what helli said actually.
Phil = Strong and will get better and/or is better now
Josh & Jake = Very sweet, they love their dad very much
TV = good (it got me out of trouble with my mom when I did something similar not long after that episode aired…I didn’t think it would be a big deal, but it was to my mom LOL)
Phil,
You’re really strong and I really like watching you and your kids on tv. Be safe, have fun with your motorcycles and birdfeeders (or birdhouses, which was it?), and have lots of luck fishing!
Also, tell Jake that I
April 25th, 2008 at 10:08 am
I hope that if any of this is on the show that they handle it with great sensitivity. I hope they do not show you having a medical emergency because it’s not something I want to see but if they decide to they better not exploit the situation.
April 24th, 2008 at 10:57 pm
Phil,
I don’t even know if you check out these notes on this blog. My suspicion is that you may not even know what the word “blog” means! You’re a fisherman. A hard-working, get-the-job-done-no-matter-what guy. My dad was the same way. He was a longshoreman on the Delaware River in Philly. Long story short, life took him all too quickly away from us in 2002 when he died at 52 years old for not taking good enough care of himself - his diabetes or his heart. He just kept going and going like that damn Energizer Bunny. But you know what? He did what he wanted to do in life. His #1 dream was to get a house on a hill in the country. He worked thousands of hours of overtime to do it. And he did. He was only able to live there 7 years, but he made his dream come true. I’m telling you this because I know you’re going to do whatever you want, whether that’s take care of yourself or not, and your kids will respect you for whatever decision you make - because they know you made your dreams come true. For the sake of them, I hope you do take better care of yourself. I’d love to have my dad back, and wish he did. But I don’t regret the lifestyle he had or the career he had. He was damn good at it. And I never got the chance to tell him that. You’re damn good at your job too Phil, you’re an inspiration for a lot of us out here. Just please don’t forget that once you’re gone from this world, there’s nothing that will replace you. God Bless.
April 24th, 2008 at 8:37 pm
April 24th, 2008 at 7:53 pm
My God, chill out everyone…Phil is the strongestof anyone around. Lay off his boys, they love their Dad and would never do anything to hurt him. Trust me Pil (and Jake) can afford the freaking TV. Yes, Phil went through an ordeal but he is fine and doing his thing…he’ll be fine. Lay off the stupid “strong die young bullshit, it is the strong, ornery people that survive health issues. Phil can still kick anyones ass, and will continue to be the strong extraordinary person we all love. Tell him to enjoy life and get laid, not friggin lay down and take this BS. He needs encouragement not your condolenscences.
Anyway, sorry I’m not so usually opiniated but give them a break! The strong just get stronger, and that is what Phil will do, anyone want to put big money on it..and I personally think that whomever is calling Jake and Josh “punks” need to learn the meaning of the word. This is completely inappropriate!
Still love you all, but think about the negative conatations your putting in our favorite crews mind…Mind your fucking manner, folks.
April 24th, 2008 at 5:17 pm
Phil:
Take care of yourself your sons need you I lost my own dad to cancer at 70 and I was 40 took it real hard it would devastate your sons. You are a great captain I would have been honored to serve under you when I was on board the 378′ cutters back in the eighties up in the bering sea on fishery patrols.Get out on your harley and in the wind relaxing best of health .

Hey Phil: You are my favorite and I am sorry to hear about your health. Hope that you are better soon. You need to take better care of your self. Boys you need to stop doing all this stuff that causes your dad’s blood pressure to rise, you need to take care of your dad and make sure that he is going to be around for many more fishing seasons and many more years of your life.
Lisa

WOW!!!! Phil take care of yourself. And don’t let Jake use your credit card anymore.
We love you!!!!!!
April 23rd, 2008 at 7:15 pm
Thought for sure we would be watching you have a heart attack. Looks like you picked something a little more exotic. All that blood had to take a few years off the boys lives….scarey!!!! Unfortunatly some wake up calls have to come in like a sledge hammer to be taken seriously. Hope you are recovering well. You’re my favorite!!!!!!!!
April 23rd, 2008 at 5:06 pm
Hi Phil,
I just finished watching your interview, just caught the second episode of the season last night and had no idea…I did however think you didn’t look like your chipper self this season so far. Live hard, die young as they say - but I hope you will not be one of those. I’m not going to tell you what to do, I’m sure your doctors have already told you what needs to be done to extend your life! We love you here in Texas!!!!!! Get well soon and shut up and fish! Love ya Phil!!
April 23rd, 2008 at 4:06 pm
Phil:
Like everyone else, my thoughts and prayers are with you. WE LOVE YOU! Please take care of yourself because there is something very special about you that reaches through our TVs.

I’m glad to hear you are feeling better. Take care of yourself and remember you can’t keep a good man down. I enjoy seeing you interact with your crew and sons, it reminds me a lot of me and my son. But one good thing is that my son got me hooked on watching the show. lol.

Just found out about your health……man u gotta change a few things! Being a smoker myself and having had a bad heart attack, u would think I would take the hint but not yet!
Anyway, u and your crew are my favorites so please get well and take care.
Bill
April 23rd, 2008 at 8:30 am
Phil, I wish you speedy recovery and a return to good health. You remind me a lot of my own dad and I know how scary it must have been for the boys. Although I never thought I’d see someone who drinks as much redbull as I do! Take it easy big guy!
April 23rd, 2008 at 8:19 am
Phil,
We love you here in southern Illinois! Hope you are back to your old self soon. Being a smoker and having a massive heart attack at 37, I can’t say much about your smoking, but it may help to quit. (I didn’t). My best friend, Deb, and I can’t wait to hear that your health is improving and your boys are taking care of you and not putting your butt in the old folks home! All the best! Thanks for letting us be a part of your lives.

April 23rd, 2008 at 6:58 am
Wow! I was a little worried about you in this last episode with you pounding the Red Bulls, coffee, and cigs. Now I stumbled upon you having a heart problem. Thought you were quitting the cigs anyway? You are most definately one of my favorites on Deadliest, so please take care of yourself. Speaking of which, I hope you have put those 2 punk kids of yours
to work helping you out right now. Come back strong. Love seeing you rival Sig and Johnathan. God Bless.

Phil,
Just wanted to let you know that you have a lot of fans out there who are pulling for you. You’ve become such a fan favorite over the years, not just because of your success as a fisherman, but because of the obvious affection you have for your two boys and your overall care and concern you show for your crew. So many of us can relate to you personally - not as a crab fisherman, but as a strong father figure - so it’s alarming to know that you’re going through such a rough patch with your health. Please take care of yourself out there (no more crazy cigarette and red bull binges please!) so that you can continue to do the job that we all know you clearly enjoy! Best of luck to you!

Hi, Phil, I am so glad you are ok, PLEASE, PLEASE, take better care of yourself. Come to Georgia and sit back and relax southeren style, the peaches are gonna be good this year. Thank You so much for sharing your life with us and if you ever feel the need for a nice southern girl to take care of you, I would be more than happy to. You will be in my prayers, and I really hope you are better, we all need you so take care and be safe. Sending lots of Love your way. Your friend Angie
April 22nd, 2008 at 10:44 pm
Phil,
Thank God you are going to be ok. Please slow down on the Red Bull, I have seen the results of that stuff, A 17 year old boy had a heart attack from it.
Take care of yourself, Please. You only get one body, buddy. Stay safe, but enjoy.
April 22nd, 2008 at 9:51 pm
Phil, you need to quit smoking, and cut down on the redbull. I had a stroke 2 years ago, not fun.
Hang in there man, the boat and crew need you, so do your kids.
April 22nd, 2008 at 9:17 pm
Phil,
So glad your feeling better. Please take care of yourself you have a lot of people sending you best wishes it seems. If you can over come pulling a tooth with no pain killer, this will not hold you down for very long.
Hold up on the Red bull drinks just a tad. Try chewing lots of gum.
Hope you feel stronger and better with each day. Try to RELAX and REST some.
Sending good thoughts your way. Take care.

Hey Phil, I look forward to Deadliest Catch every week as do so many others. It would NOT be the same without you. Please take care of yourself so I can enjoy many years of your one liners. Your boys aren’t done yet, they are well on their way but still need you to show them the way. God bless and stay safe.

Hi Phil,
Hope you are doing well. Please take care of yourself. You are very important to your sons and to all us loyal viewers.
April 22nd, 2008 at 3:29 pm
Phil, hope you are feeling better. My husband and i love Deadliest Catch and the Cornelia Marie is one of our favorite boats. Take care of yourself and lay off the cigarettes!!! Best wishes and happy sailing!
April 22nd, 2008 at 1:44 pm
Phil we wish you the best in your recovery. Please do what is best for your health. Main thing is to be safe out there and keep doing what you love.
My husband and I are avid fans of the show but we are both allergic to seafood. I am highly allergic. People need to appreciate what you do in order
for them to enjoy what they like. I was made extremely ill when pregnant by crab. I did not know I was allergic and did not know it was crab.
Boys, take care of your dad he is worth it. We wish you all the best.
April 22nd, 2008 at 1:20 pm
Phil! As a person whose spent her share of her life in the hospital, I wish you nothing but the best for a good, fast recovery. Now…the niceties set aside, time to lay off the smokes and red bull man… time to take care of your health so you can be around to keep kicking Jake and Josh’s ass at the coiling contests. We love ya and look forward to seeing more of you…a healthy you!
Here’s wishing the best for a full recovery!
April 22nd, 2008 at 12:28 pm
Phil, my thoughts and prayers are with you as you heal. I must tell you that I watch the entire last season on the Discovery Channel two Sunday’s ago while I was in Chicago for a workshop. I sat in my hotel room just completely captivated by the things you guys do out on the seas looking for crab.
I hope that your boys are taking good care of you. You guys are my favorites on the show but really all of the guys are good and I will raise a glass tonight to toast you and the crew that you made it through the scare.
Good Luck and stay strong, and stay healthy.
Best wishes, Tammy Gilroy

Phil glad to see you make it. Between you and Hason bros you two guys make the show. I miss you and Rick on Maverick pranking. I do have a good prank for you to use against the Hanson boys. Get or make a coffin, tie from coffin to bottom of crab pot so when they get pot on board there will still be a rope hanging down. Either put in a plastic skeleton when arm bent upwards with middle finger for the boys when they open it. Or fill it with rotten dead fish or both. I should think that will give the boys a start. Glad you are doing good. Take care bud.
April 22nd, 2008 at 10:07 am
OMG Phil! I’m so glad to see you making appearances now, but PLEASE take care of yourself! It’s too awful to think of anything happening to you or any of the Deadliest Catch guys! I’ll be watching that episode with a box of tissues handy - can’t help it! I’ll be worrying about you MORE now!
*hugs*
April 22nd, 2008 at 9:29 am
It is heartbreaking to know what you and your crew must have went through not being able to have assistance from the coast guard. Like Mark said on last year’s show, “It’s a package deal Phil. We need you and the boat.” Please take care of yourself and I hope you feel better soon. With all of the fans sending you good thoughts I sure you will be back to your old self in no time. May you all be safe, healthy and happy.
April 22nd, 2008 at 8:55 am

Captain Phil,
Am so glad you are better. You had a heck of a season. Crab Controversy, Rogue waves, Aneurysm, Credit Card Woes, and great catches. We love you and thank you for sharing your life and work with all of us. We so enjoy your father figure/captain on the Cornelia Marie. Live long and prosper but take better care of business of health and family. We know you are a superb crabber fisherman and darn good Dad. You did ‘damn near’ die and you arent clear sailing yet. Know that we love and support you and wish you the very best. May the angels watch over you and yours always in all ways. Love and hugs.

What the hell are we gonna do with you? Man you gotta take care of yourself….so many people care about you. I know it must seem vicarious to you, but even though we…I… don’t know you personally…there is something in you, about you, that touches us. We care. Please finish whatever you have to do and take the time to get healthy.
Hugs

I love ya, but if it is going to cost you your life, quit the show. I loved meeting you last summer, but cut down on the personal appearances and get healthy. The world would not be the same without you in it.

this is for Phil’s sons: boys, nothing is more terrifying than seeing your own father in a hospital bed clinging to life, and you can’t do a damn thing about it. don’t push your father over the edge too much.
Phil: i really do hope youre feeling better.
April 21st, 2008 at 8:25 am
Phil,
Hope you get back to feeling 100% real soon. Boys you better be taking care of him really good, and Jake you can not tie him up in the basement either like you said you was gonna do when you had to take care of him. You only get one dad, spend as much time with him as possible. You all stay safe.
